Chapter 9 - THE BIRTH OF ALEXANDER

The private suite at Blackridge Memorial Hospital was filled with the soft light of a late afternoon sun.
There were no shouting husbands, no dark secrets, no security guards hiding bruises, and no fear.
There was only the sound of gentle classical music playing in the background, the soft rustle of clean linens, and the steady, loving presence of my father standing beside my bed, holding a cool washcloth against my forehead.
Dr. Patel was there, her calm, reassuring voice guiding me through each contraction.
“You’re doing wonderfully, Evelyn,” Dr. Patel said smoothly. “One more big push on the next wave.”
I took a deep, grounding breath, reaching out with my right hand. Thomas caught it instantly, his strong fingers offering an anchor as the wave built in my chest.
“You’ve got this, sweetheart,” my father whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “You are a Mercer. You are strong.”
With a final, desperate burst of strength, I pushed.
At 4:42 PM, a sharp, clear sound filled the room—a loud, indignant cry that shattered every shadow that had ever hung over my life.
Dr. Patel lifted a small, beautiful boy into the light, his skin flushed pink, his dark hair damp against his forehead.
“He’s here,” Dr. Patel laughed, placing him directly onto my bare chest. “Meet your son, Evelyn.”
The world shrank down to the tiny, warm weight lying over my heart.
He was perfect. His little fingers reached out blindly, clutching at my gown, his dark blue eyes opening slightly to look up into mine.
“Alexander,” I whispered, tears of pure joy streaming down my cheeks as I kissed his tiny forehead. “Alexander Thomas Mercer.”
Thomas leaned over the bed, looking down at his grandson. The formidable billionaire, the man who had terrified corporate boards for forty years, covered his face with his hands and wept quietly with unbridled happiness.

“He looks like you, Eleanor,” Thomas whispered toward the ceiling, his voice trembling with love.
Alexander quieted down, his little chest rising and falling against mine as he listened to my heartbeat—the same rhythm he had listened to while we fought for our freedom together.
