Chapter 4 - THE SANCTUARY

"Hang on!" Daniel screamed, slamming his foot on the brakes.
Our sedan fishtailed violently across the slick asphalt, tires screeching against ice. The heavy SUV overshot us, skidding down the highway before turning around to block both lanes ahead.
"Hold Lily!" Daniel yelled. He threw the transmission into reverse, spun the wheel hard, and executed a desperate three-point turn, sending our car flying back in the direction we had come.
The SUV swung around to pursue us, but Daniel ducked onto a narrow, unlit gravel forest road marked Local Access Only. He turned off our headlights, relying purely on the pale moonlight reflecting off the snow to navigate through the dense trees.
We drove in pitch blackness for three agonizing miles, turning randomly onto old logging trails until the roar of the SUV's engine faded entirely into the distance.
An hour later, covered in a thick layer of road slush, our car pulled into the snow-covered driveway of Sarah's farmhouse.
The front porch light flickered on, and Sarah stepped out wrapped in a thick wool coat, holding a heavy flashlight.
When she saw me step out of the car carrying Lily, her face fell.
"Anna," Sarah breathed, rushing down the porch steps. She didn't ask questions. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms gently around my shoulders, avoiding my bruised ribs, and ushered us straight inside into the warmth of her kitchen.
Within twenty minutes, Sarah had wrapped Lily in a warm quilt on her guest room bed, set up a tray of tea and ice packs, and begun examining my injuries with expert, practical care.
"Two cracked ribs," Sarah noted gently, pressing lightly against my side. "A severe contusion on your cheekbone, and a laceration on your lip that should have had stitches four hours ago. We need to document every single inch of this, Anna."
She pulled out a high-resolution camera and began taking detailed photos of my injuries from multiple angles.
"Is this for the police?" Daniel asked, leaning against the kitchen counter, his hands still shaking from the car chase.
"This is for survival," Sarah corrected, her eyes sharp and focused. "Derek Callahan isn't just an abusive husband; he's a senior partner at a high-profile corporate legal firm. He knows every loophole in the domestic violence statutes. If we don't build an airtight case tonight, he will use his money and influence to brand Anna as an unfit, hysterical mother and take Lily away from her."
I looked at Sarah, fear clutching my chest. "He can take Lily?"
"Not if I have anything to say about it," Sarah said, setting the camera down and sitting across from me. "But you need to understand what you're up against, Anna. Your husband, your father, and your mother are all aligned against you because their financial interests are intertwined. They will lie for him to protect their lifestyle."
May you like
"I don't care about their lifestyle anymore," I said, looking down at my bruised hands. "I just want my daughter to grow up safe."
"Then tomorrow," Sarah declared, "we go to war."
