Chapter 5 - THE LEGAL WEAPON

The next morning broke clear and freezing cold. By 8:00 AM, Sarah had transformed her dining room table into a legal war room, stacked high with financial documents, property records, and law books.

"First step," Sarah explained, pouring black coffee into three mugs. "An emergency restraining order with a temporary custody mandate. We file it in county court at 9:00 AM."

"Can Derek fight it?" Daniel asked.

"He will try," Sarah replied. "He'll claim Anna absconded with his child without cause. That's why these medical photos and Daniel's testimony about the car chase are crucial. But we have another angle to exploit."

She slid a tablet across the table to me. On the screen was a detailed corporate filing for Callahan Development Group—my father's real estate firm.

"I spent two hours pulling public filings last night," Sarah said. "Your father's monthly three-thousand-dollar payment from Derek wasn't paid as personal gifts or spousal support. It was routed through an offshore subsidiary registered in Delaware as 'consulting retainers.'"

I frowned. "Why would Derek route it through a subsidiary?"

"Because," Sarah's eyes gleamed with legal precision, "it's commercial bribery. Derek was using his firm's corporate accounts to pay your father in exchange for discounted commercial leases on properties owned by your family's trust. Your father was underreporting his income to avoid taxes, and Derek was writing off domestic abuse hush-money as corporate business expenses."

The reality hit me like a physical blow. "So my father was selling out his own daughter to help my husband commit tax fraud?"

"Precisely," Sarah said. "And that gives us massive leverage. If Derek tries to use his power to take Lily, we don't just file for divorce—we notify the IRS and the state attorney general's financial crimes unit."

Before I could answer, Daniel's phone vibrated on the table. It was an unknown number.

He answered on speakerphone.

"Daniel," my mother's crying voice came through the speaker, distorted with panic. "You have to come back! Please! Derek is here with his lawyers!"

"Mom," Daniel said sternly. "Leave us alone."

"You don't understand!" my mother wailed. "Derek has revoked all of our corporate lines of credit! He's freezing the business accounts! Your father is having chest pains! If Anna doesn't bring Lily back to sign a reconciliation statement by noon, we are completely ruined!"

I took the phone from Daniel's hand.

"Mom," I said, my voice echoing coldly through the room.

There was a sudden pause on the line. "Anna? Sweetheart! Please, be reasonable—"

"Listen to me carefully," I interrupted, every trace of fear gone from my chest, replaced by an icy, unwavering resolve. "Tell Derek that if he ever sets foot near my daughter again, I won't just leave him. I will make sure he spends the next ten years in a federal prison."

I hung up the phone and threw it onto the table.
