Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of Ruin

While the grand halls of Oakhaven Palace were being prepared for the Summer Solstice Gala, fifty miles away in a modest hotel room near the capital’s commercial district, total desperation had taken root.
Daniel Mercer sat on the edge of a unmade bed, his expensive tuxedo from three days ago crumpled and stained, his eyes bloodshot and hollow.
Sitting across from him at a small laminate table was his mother, Eleanor, who looked ten years older. Her polished, high-society composure had completely shattered; her hands shook as she repeatedly refreshed the financial news applications on her smartphone.
“It’s gone, Daniel,” Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror. “Everything is gone.”
“What do you mean gone?” Daniel barked, pulling at his unkempt hair. “What about Father’s trust fund? What about the Marblehead estate?!”
“Foreclosed!” Eleanor cried out, slamming her phone onto the table. “The bank called an hour ago! The holding company that bought our mortgage debt three years ago was an imperial subsidiary! The moment you canceled the wedding, they defaulted our loan! The marshals are seizing the house on Monday!”
Daniel let out a pathetic groan, burying his face in his hands.
In three short days, his entire reality had been systematically obliterated. He had been fired from his high-paying executive job at Franklin Grace, his personal bank accounts had been frozen pending legal investigations into corporate misconduct, and his family’s multi-generation social standing in Boston had turned into an international laughingstock.
The doorbell to the hotel room rang frantically.
Daniel jumped up, opening the door.
Arthur Sterling—the powerful, ruthless patriarch of Sterling Global Logistics—marched into the room, followed by his daughter, Victoria. Arthur was red-faced, his suit wrinkled, looking ready to commit murder. Victoria was crying silently behind dark sunglasses.
Without saying a word, Arthur stepped forward and landed a vicious, heavy backhand across Daniel’s face.
The force of the blow knocked Daniel onto the floor, his lip splitting open against his teeth.
“You absolute idiot!” Arthur roared, towering over Daniel, his chest heaving with murderous fury. “You absolute, brainless, arrogant fool!”
“Arthur! Stop!” Eleanor screamed, rushing forward to shield her son.
“Shut up, Eleanor!” Arthur snarled, pointing a shaking finger at her. “Your pathetic, gold-digging son told us Claire Bennett was an orphan with no money! He assured us she was a nobody! Do you have any idea what his stupidity has cost my family?!”
Arthur threw a stack of financial printouts onto the bed.
“Sterling Global Logistics stock is down seventy-eight percent!” Arthur screamed. “Our European shipping containers are stranded in international waters, accruing millions in daily port fines! The banks have pulled our credit lines! We are facing total corporate liquidation by the end of the week!”
Victoria stepped forward, her voice high and hysterical. “Daniel, you told me she was just a hospital worker! You swore she had nothing! You lied to me!”
“I didn’t lie!” Daniel yelled from the floor, wiping blood from his mouth, his voice breaking. “She drove a dented Honda! She lived above a laundromat! She filled out insurance forms for fifty thousand dollars a year! How was I supposed to know she was a crown princess?!”
“Because a real man would have looked at her character instead of her bank account!” Arthur spat, his eyes full of pure disgust.
Arthur took a deep breath, forcing his rage back under control, pulling four gold-embossed entry passes from his coat pocket.
“I managed to buy these passes for the gallery of the Imperial Gala tonight from a corrupt embassy aide,” Arthur said, his voice cold and desperate. “This is our only chance. The Emperor and Crown Princess Clara will be in the main ballroom in front of two hundred foreign journalists.”
He pointed at Daniel.
“You are going to put on a clean suit, Daniel,” Arthur ordered terrifyingly. “You are going to crawl on your hands and knees across that ballroom floor, and you are going to beg Crown Princess Clara to forgive you. If she shows a single shred of mercy, the Emperor might lift the maritime blockades. If she doesn’t... I will make sure you and your mother spend the rest of your lives in debt collector prison.”
Daniel looked at the gold entry passes on the table, feeling a cold, terrifying shiver run down his spine.
He remembered Claire’s soft voice in the hospital hallway, her quiet laugh over pizza, the way she had looked at him when he proposed by the river.

He had held the ultimate prize in his hands—true love, unimaginable wealth, and imperial power beyond his wildest dreams. And he had thrown it all away for a diamond tiara and a corporate shipping contract.
“I’ll beg,” Daniel whispered, his tears dropping onto the hotel carpet. “I’ll beg her on my knees.”
