Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNTING

Flynn pulled the binder toward himself with an annoyed flick of his wrist. He flicked open the heavy cover, his eyes skimming the formal legal letterhead at the top of the first page.
"What is this? Some old papers from Arthur’s estate?" he muttered, trying to maintain his dismissive tone. "Your father’s estate was closed three years ago, Mabel. I signed the tax receipts myself. There was nothing left after the debts were paid."
"Keep reading," I said.
He turned to page twelve.
I watched his eyes move across the lines of black text. I watched the arrogant smirk on his lips slowly flatten. Then I watched his jaw go completely slack.
"Aegis Holdings Ltd... seventy-eight percent equity share... voting control of Vance Global Financial Inc... Beneficial Owner: Mabel Mercer."
Flynn’s thumb slipped on the paper. "This... this is a mistake. Aegis Holdings is a private venture fund based in the Cayman Islands! They were our primary angel investor during our Series B round!"
"They weren't an angel investor, Flynn," I explained, leaning back in the leather chair, crossing my legs elegantly. "That was my father’s master trust. When you came to him eight years ago begging for seed money to start your firm, he didn't trust your business plan. He knew you were reckless with leverage. So he bought your debt, structured your equity pool through Aegis Holdings, and placed seventy-eight percent of Vance Global’s voting shares into a private trust."
Flynn dropped the folder onto the desk as if the paper had burned his skin. "No... no, Arthur told me he only put up two hundred thousand dollars!"
"He lied to you, Flynn," I said smoothly. "He wanted to see how you would treat his daughter when you believed you were the sole king of the castle. He left the trust in the hands of Harrison Cole, with strict instructions that the controlling ownership would remain hidden... until I chose to reveal it."
Flynn slammed both hands down on the desk, his face turning purple with rage. "This is fraudulent! You concealed corporate assets! You let me run this company for five years thinking I owned it!"
"You ran it into the ground, Flynn," I corrected him sharply. "You used corporate capital to buy luxury real estate for your mistress. You spent $110,000 of firm funds on a diamond necklace while telling your wife we couldn't afford $1,800 a month for our child’s living expenses."
Flynn staggered back a step, grabbing the back of an armchair to steady himself. The reality of his situation was beginning to break through his thick skull.
If I owned seventy-eight percent of Aegis Holdings, I didn't just own a stake in Vance Global.
I owned the company outright.
I had the power to fire the Board of Directors. I had the power to terminate the CEO without severance. I had the power to initiate an emergency forensic audit of every expense account, every wire transfer, and every offshore account tied to his name.
"Mabel..." Flynn’s voice suddenly lost all its aggressive venom. It trembled, dropping into a desperate, panicked whisper. "Mabel, sweetie... listen to me. We're married. We're a team! Everything I did, I did to grow the company for our family! For Clara!"
"Don't you dare speak our daughter’s name," I warned him, my voice dropping to an icy tone that made him flinch. "You didn't buy that necklace for Clara. You didn't buy that Seaport apartment for Clara. You spent three years treating me like an uneducated servant while you paraded your mistress around Boston."
"I'll end it!" Flynn yelled, rushing around the desk, throwing himself down onto his knees beside my chair. He tried to grab my hands, but I pulled them back out of his reach. "I'll fire Selina tonight! Right now! I'll call her on speaker! I'll break her lease! I'll sell the necklace and put every dollar back into our joint account!"
Tears were actually forming in his eyes now—not tears of remorse for the pain he had caused me, but tears of absolute terror at losing his status, his wealth, and his pathetic illusion of power.
"I don't care about the necklace, Flynn," I said, looking down at him with cold detachment. "And I don't care about Selina. She is merely a symptom of your pathetic greed."
"What do you want?" he sobbed, clutching the arms of my chair. "What do you want me to do?! Please, Mabel... don't destroy Vance Global! It's my life!"
"It was never your life," I replied, standing up, walking around his kneeling form toward the door of the study. "It was my father’s money. And starting tomorrow morning... it belongs to me."
"Mabel, wait!" he scrambled to his feet, chasing me into the hallway. "Where are you going?!"
I stopped at the top of the stairs, looking back at him over my shoulder.
"I'm going to pack Clara’s bags," I said quietly. "We're leaving tonight. And at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, Harrison Cole will be arriving at Vance Global Tower with a federal forensic accounting team and an emergency order from the Board of Directors."
"You can't do this to me!" Flynn screamed, his voice echoing through the silent, dark house. "I made that company! Without me, Vance Global is nothing!"

"We'll find out tomorrow, won't we?" I said.
I turned and walked down the hall to my daughter’s room, locking the door behind me.
