Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT BEGINS

At 8:45 AM the following morning, the sun rose over downtown Boston, casting long, gold rays across the glass facade of Vance Global Financial Tower.

I stood in the marble lobby, wearing a tailored navy blue suit that had belonged to my mother—a sharp, immaculate piece of vintage tailoring that had sat in my closet for four years. My hair was pulled back into a tight, professional chignon. Beside me stood Harrison Cole, a silver-haired man of sixty-five whose quiet eyes possessed the cold sharpness of a razor blade.

Behind us walked six young men and women in dark gray suits, carrying heavy black leather briefcase-style laptops. They were the senior audit team from Cole & Mercer Legal Advisory.

"Are you ready for this, Mabel?" Harrison asked softly, checking his golden pocket watch.

"I've been ready for three years, Harrison," I replied calmly.

We stepped into the executive elevator. Harrison tapped his private security card against the reader, pressing the button for the 40th Floor: Executive Suites.

When the doors opened, the atmosphere on the executive floor was pure, unadulterated chaos.

Phone lines were ringing off the hook at every secretary’s desk. Junior analysts were whispering frantically in clusters around the water coolers. The morning headlines had already broke: VANCE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CEO IMPLODED IN LIVE EXECUTIVES BROADCAST.

Vance Global’s stock price had plummeted fourteen percent at the opening bell.

As Harrison and I walked down the central glass corridor toward the corner office, the employees froze. Whispers swept through the floor like a wildfire.

"Is that Mrs. Vance?" "What is she doing here?" "Who are those attorneys?"

Flynn’s corner office door was slammed shut, but through the frosted glass, we could hear his voice screaming at someone over a speakerphone.

Harrison didn't knock. He simply turned the silver handle and pushed the door wide open.

Flynn was standing behind his mahogany desk, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, dark circles under his eyes. He looked as though he hadn't slept a single second. Sitting on the leather couch near the window was Selina. She was wearing a simple dark dress, her face red and blotchy from crying, her hands clutching a designer handbag.

Flynn slammed his fist on the desk as we walked in. "Harrison! What the hell is the meaning of this?! This is private corporate property! Get these people out of my office!"

Harrison Cole didn't even blink. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick set of legal documents, and laid them neatly on the desk in front of Flynn.

"As of 8:00 AM this morning, Mr. Vance," Harrison announced in a clear, booming voice that echoed into the hallway, "a formal requisition of voting authority was executed by Aegis Holdings Ltd., which represents seventy-eight percent of the outstanding common equity of Vance Global Financial Inc."

Flynn stared at the paper. "You can't do that without a Board meeting!"

"The emergency Board meeting occurred at 7:30 AM via secure link," Harrison replied with a tight, vicious smile. "With seventy-eight percent of the votes cast by Mrs. Mabel Mercer-Vance as controlling trustee, the Board voted unanimously to suspend your executive powers, strip you of your signing authority, and initiate an immediate forensic audit of all corporate operations."

Flynn turned his horrified eyes toward me. "Mabel... please... you can't ruin me in front of the whole industry!"

"You ruined yourself, Flynn," I said stepping forward, leaning my hands on the mahogany desk, staring directly into his trembling eyes. "The moment you brought corporate assets into your personal bedroom, you destroyed your own career."

Selina jumped up from the couch, her voice shrill with terror. "Mabel! I didn't know! Flynn told me you two were already separated! He told me the divorce papers were being drawn up!"

I didn't even turn my head to look at her. "Miss Vance, your employment with Vance Global Financial is terminated immediately for gross breach of corporate ethics. You have ten minutes to clear your personal desk under security supervision. If you attempt to delete a single file from your computer, federal charges will be filed."

Selina let out a pathetic choke, dropped her handbag, and scrambled out of the office past the security guards standing at the door.

Flynn collapsed back into his leather chair, his face pale as chalk. "Mabel... please. Don't do this to me. We can talk about this privately. We can arrange a quiet resignation..."

"No resignation, Flynn," Harrison Cole interrupted, waving his hand toward the six forensic auditors behind us. "Gentlemen, seal the room. Mirror the servers. Lock down every bank account associated with Vance Global, and pull the full expense ledgers for the past thirty-six months."

Harrison turned back to Flynn, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.

"We aren't just taking your company, Mr. Vance. We're going to find every single dollar you stole."
