Chapter 10 - New Beginnings

A year later, the scandal had faded from the headlines, replaced by the relentless, forward march of the business world.
Vextor Dynamics had transformed under my leadership. We pivoted from aggressive, unsustainable expansion to solid, innovative tech development. Our stock prices had doubled, and I was featured on the cover of Forbes as one of the top female CEOs in the country. The article mentioned my divorce only in passing, framing it as the catalyst for my professional liberation.
I sat in my corner office, the morning sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow over the glass desk.
My assistant knocked gently on the door and stepped in. “Ms. Lawson, the representatives from the Tokyo merger are on line one. And a floral delivery just arrived for you.”
“Put the call through in two minutes. And bring the flowers in.”
She brought in a massive, beautiful arrangement of white orchids and set them on the coffee table. There was a small, embossed card nestled in the blooms.
I opened it.
“To a woman who understands the value of strength. The twins took their first steps today. I thought you would want to know. — Evelyn.”
A genuine smile touched my lips. Evelyn and I were not friends, but we were allies bonded by the fire of survival. She was raising Jonathan’s children with the discipline and love they deserved, and Christopher was a ghost, living out his days in quiet exile, far away from the power he once craved. Michelle was serving a five-year sentence in a federal facility for fraud.
The universe had a way of balancing the scales, provided you had the patience to let it happen, and the courage to give it a little push.
I walked over to the windows, looking out over the sprawling city of San Diego. The ocean glittered in the distance, vast and boundless. For so long, I had let a man define my worth, my body, and my future. I had believed I was broken because I couldn't provide the one thing he demanded.
But looking at the empire I had secured, the peace I felt in my own heart, and the unwritten future stretching out before me, I knew the truth.
I wasn't broken. I was forged.

I walked back to my desk, pressed the flashing button on the console, and picked up the phone.
“Gentlemen,” I said smoothly, stepping into the rest of my life. “Let’s talk business.”
