Chapter 3 - The Audit

By six o'clock that evening, the estate was silent once again.

Julian and Victoria had been escorted out to the main gate by Marcus’s team, permitted to take only their personal clothing and vehicles registered in their own names.

I sat in the master nursery—not the master bedroom, which I had ordered sealed until a professional cleaning crew could strip the bed and throw away every piece of linen—feeding Cora in a comfortable rocking chair near the window.

The door opened softly, and Arthur Pendelton walked in carrying a sleek leather briefcase.

Arthur was sixty-two years old, with sharp blue eyes and a posture that commanded absolute discipline. He had served my father for thirty years as chief legal counsel for the trust, and he looked at me not just as a client, but as the daughter of his closest friend.

"She’s beautiful, Elena," Arthur whispered gently, looking down at Cora. "She has Harrison’s quiet eyes."

"Thank you, Arthur," I murmured, resting my chin against Cora's soft hair. "Is everything in motion?"

"Everything," Arthur said, sitting in the armchair opposite me. He pulled a thick folder from his briefcase and laid it on the small side table. "The credit facilities for Vance Enterprises have been formally frozen as of four-thirty PM. The commercial lenders have already been notified that the Sterling Trust is no longer guaranteeing their debt obligations."

"What happens to Julian's company now?"

"Without our secondary liquidity, Vance Enterprises is insolvent," Arthur explained smoothly. "Their payroll account is overdrawn by three hundred thousand dollars. Their primary supplier in Munich suspended shipments twenty minutes ago after learning of the trust withdrawal. By ten o'clock tomorrow morning, the board will have no choice but to initiate Chapter 11 proceedings."

I closed my eyes for a brief second. A small part of me—the foolish, loyal girl who had spent six years trying to be the perfect wife—felt a twinge of sadness. But then I remembered standing in that hallway, listening to Julian laugh while I held our five-day-old baby after sitting alone in a hospital ward.

The sadness evaporated, leaving behind pure, cold clarity.

"What about the forensic audit of the corporate accounts?" I asked.

Arthur’s expression darkened. "That is where things become significantly more serious, Elena. Our auditors spent the last three hours scanning the internal transaction logs of Vance Enterprises. Julian hasn't just been mismanaging funds—he’s been committing outright corporate fraud."

I looked up from Cora. "Fraud?"

"He diverted four point two million dollars from the Sterling research grant over the last eighteen months," Arthur said, handing me a document. "He funneled the money through a shell company registered in Delaware under the name Vance Capital Management. The primary beneficiary of that shell account?"

Arthur paused, looking me squarely in the eye.

"Victoria Vance."

A bitter laugh escaped my throat. "So my mother-in-law wasn't just encouraging his behavior—she was getting paid from my father's trust money to do it."

"Precisely," Arthur confirmed. "She bought a condo in Naples, Florida, two months ago using funds drawn directly from that account. We have the wire receipts."

Cora finished nursing and let out a tiny, soft burp against my shoulder. I patted her back gently, watching the late afternoon sun cast golden light across the nursery rug.

"Arthur," I said quietly.

"Yes, Miss Sterling?"

"Do not file for bankruptcy protection on behalf of Vance Enterprises."

Arthur raised an eyebrow. "If we don't file, the creditors will file involuntary liquidation petitions, and the state attorney general will review the books."

"Good," I replied, meeting his eyes with absolute calm. "Let the state attorney general review every single page. I want every dollar stolen from my father's trust accounted for, and I want Victoria and Julian held personally liable for every cent."

May you like

Arthur smiled—a razor-sharp, aristocratic expression that reflected thirty years of legal battles.

"It will be my absolute pleasure, Elena."
