Chapter 4 - The Public Fall

By eight o'clock the following morning, the financial world of Richmond was in utter chaos.
The headline on the front page of the Virginia Business Journal read:
VANCE ENTERPRISES COLLAPSES AS STERLING HERITAGE FUND WITHDRAWS ALL FINANCIAL BACKING; CEO JULIAN VANCE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CORPORATE FRAUD.
Sitting in the sunlit breakfast nook of my estate, sipping warm chamomile tea while Cora slept in her bassinet beside me, I read the article calmly.
The story was brutal. It revealed that Vance Enterprises—long praised as a rising tech powerhouse—was nothing more than an empty shell maintained by Sterling capital. It detailed the immediate freeze on corporate assets, the resignation of six senior board members overnight, and the pending legal actions regarding four million dollars in missing research funds.
My phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unlisted number, but I knew who it was. I swiped the screen and set it on speakerphone.
"Elena! Please!" Julian’s voice came crashing through the speaker, raspy, hyperventilating, and filled with complete panic. "Elena, you have to talk to the press! They're standing outside my mother's apartment building! The reporters are everywhere!"
"Good morning, Julian," I said softly, taking a slow sip of tea.
"Elena, you're destroying my life!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "The bank froze my personal credit card! I tried to buy breakfast for my mother, and the card was declined at the counter! Do you know how humiliating that was?!"
"I imagine it felt somewhat similar to sitting alone in a hospital room for three hours after giving birth," I replied coldly. "While seventeen calls go straight to voicemail."
"I told you I was sorry about that!" Julian wept, transitioning from rage to pitiful pleading in a split second. "I was terrified of becoming a father, Elena! I panicked! Chloe was just someone who made me feel like I was in control again! It didn't mean anything!"
"If she didn't mean anything, Julian," I noted, "then you sacrificed your company, your marriage, your reputation, and your home for nothing."
"Elena... please," he whimpered. "My mother is having chest pains! She can't handle this kind of stress! The state prosecutors served us with a grand jury subpoena thirty minutes ago regarding the Delaware shell company! They're talking about wire fraud, Elena! Wire fraud carries federal prison time!"
"Then I suggest your mother hires a very good criminal defense attorney," I said. "Though I doubt she'll be able to afford one using her Naples condo equity once Arthur attaches a lien to it."
Silence hung over the line for three long seconds.
"You... you attached a lien to her condo?" Julian whispered in absolute disbelief.
"Arthur attached liens to every asset purchased with stolen Sterling capital," I corrected gently. "Including your Porsche, Julian. I believe the repo tow truck is scheduled to arrive at your mother's parking garage by eleven o'clock."
"You're a monster," Julian spat, his tone suddenly turning ugly, venomous, and dark. "You lied to me for six years! You let me believe I was running that company while you held the leash behind my back!"
"I didn't hold a leash, Julian," I said, standing up and looking out over the manicured lawn. "I gave you the keys to a kingdom built by my father, and you used them to lock me out while you entertained mistresses in my bedroom. You destroyed yourself."
I hung up the phone before he could reply, immediately blocking the number.

Behind me, Cora stirred in her bassinet, opening her bright blue eyes and letting out a small, sweet coo. I picked her up, holding her close to my chest, feeling her tiny heart beating steadily against mine.
"Don't worry, little one," I whispered into her ear. "The noise is over."
