Chapter 1 - The Silver Heels

The scent of rain and leather filled the limousine, suffocatingly heavy. For five long years, I had believed that Adrian Vale was a man made entirely of iron and quiet calculations. I had watched him command rooms full of hardened men without ever raising his voice. I had seen him face down rival family bosses, crooked city officials, and federal agents with the same impassive, granite composure.
Yet here he was, kneeling on the plush carpet of our custom Mercedes Sprinter limousine, his hands trembling as he cradled my bruised, bare foot.
"I didn't hide from you because I lacked love, Claire," Adrian whispered, his dark eyes rising to meet mine. The intensity in his gaze made my throat tighten. "I hid from you because every time I let you close to my life, someone tried to use you to bleed me."
"And so you bled me instead," I snapped, my voice laced with the bitterness of five years spent in a gilded cage. "You locked me in the estate. You gave me bodyguards who were actually jailers. You let me sit at dinner parties where everyone knew your business except the woman who shared your bed!"
Adrian didn't defend himself. He simply lowered his head again, pressing his forehead against my knee in a gesture of utter, desperate surrender.
Behind the glass partition, Nolan Price shifted uncomfortably. Carter Reeve cleared his throat, staring intently at the rain-slicked windshield. These men had watched Adrian execute traitorous lieutenants without blinking, yet they were visibly terrified by their boss's grief.
"I am not asking you to stay for my sake," Adrian said, his voice muffled against my dress. "I know I failed you. I know I built a prison and called it protection. But if you walk out of this car tonight, Claire, you walk straight into the target someone painted on your back six months ago."
I paused, my hand hovering over the door handle. "What are you talking about?"
"The messages," Adrian murmured, rising slowly to sit on the leather bench opposite me. The vulnerability that had briefly consumed him was pushed back behind a wall of cold, deadly focus. "The letters you sent to your sister in Seattle. The emails to your old college friends. The desperate texts you sent to your cousin asking for a place to stay."

My heart skipped a beat. "You read my private messages?"
"I didn't read them, Claire," Adrian said softly, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a thick, black leather-bound ledger. "Because they never left the house. Someone inside my inner circle has been intercepting and erasing every single cry for help you've sent for the last hundred and eighty days."
