Chapter 6 - The Brother’s Shadow

The door to the study opened quietly.

I grabbed the pistol, pointing it instinctively at the opening before my brain registered Adrian's tall, dark silhouette stepping into the light.

He raised his hands slowly, a faint, dark smile touching his lips despite the gravity of the situation. "Good reaction time, carina."

"Adrian," I breathed, lowering the gun, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Look at this."

He walked over to the desk, leaning over my shoulder as I pointed to the recovered server logs on the screen. His eyes scanned the lines of code with practiced ease. As his gaze hit the IP address and the physical location tag, I felt his entire body go rigid.

The warmth that had lingered around him evaporated, replaced by a cold, arctic aura that filled the room.

"Julian," Adrian whispered. The name came out like a death sentence.

"He's your brother, Adrian," I said, my voice trembling as I reached out to touch his arm. "Why would Julian do this to me? He's been like a younger brother to me for five years! He helped me curate the autumn exhibition! He had dinner with us last Sunday!"

"Julian didn't do this to you, Claire," Adrian said, his tone terrifyingly quiet. "He did this to me."

He turned away, walking over to the cold fireplace, staring at the empty hearth. "My father left the empire to me eight years ago because Julian was volatile, greedy, and lacked the discipline to manage our family's interests. Julian has spent the last decade believing I stole his birthright."

"So he targeted me?"

"He knew that as long as you were happy and secure, I was untouchable," Adrian explained, turning his dark eyes back to me. "A man with a stable home and a loyal wife is focused. But if he broke you... if he made you feel abandoned, unloved, and desperate enough to leave me..."

Adrian took a slow breath, his chest rising and falling heavily. "He knew that if you left me, I would lose my mind. He knew I would tear this city apart looking for you, abandon my post, leave my flank exposed, and make a fatal mistake."

The terrifying brilliance of the plot settled over me like an iron shroud. Julian hadn't needed to hire assassins or plant bombs. He had simply manipulated my emotions, weaponized my deepest insecurities, and used my love for my family against me to break the king of the Chicago underworld from within.

"And tonight," I realized, the horrifying truth dawning on me, "when I walked out of that anniversary party with a suitcase... I gave Julian exactly what he wanted."

"Yes," Adrian said softly. "Which means Julian is about to make his move."
