Chapter 3 - THE ANONYMOUS ALLY

The night air was crisp, carrying the scent of rain and damp asphalt. I scrambled down the metal steps of the fire escape, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. My hands were bruised, and my robe flapped around my legs, but I didn't care. Survival instincts I didn't know I possessed had taken over.
I reached the ground floor alleyway, slipped through the side entrance of the luxury resort, and walked briskly into the expansive, dimly lit lobby.
Standing near a tall marble pillar by the concierge desk was a woman wearing a bright yellow trench coat. She held a takeaway coffee cup in one hand and was staring intently at her phone.
As I approached, she looked up.
It was Lauren. Ethan’s sister.
I stopped in my tracks, my body tensing instantly. "You?"
Lauren looked around nervously, pulled down her sunglasses, and motioned for me to follow her toward a quiet, secluded seating area behind a row of large indoor palm trees.
"Keep your voice down," Lauren whispered fiercely. "Ethan has Ryan checking the security cameras right now."
"You were in the photo!" I accused her, my voice shaking with a mix of anger and betrayal. "You were sitting at that table three months ago! You were standing by the fountain tonight, laughing with them!"
"I was standing by the fountain covering my mouth because I was horrified!" Lauren snapped back, her eyes wide with urgency. "And I was at that lunch three months ago because Ethan told me he was planning a surprise flash-mob dance for you! I had no idea what he was actually writing on that document until last night!"
I stared at her, trying to determine if she was lying. "Last night?"
"Ryan left his tablet open on the kitchen counter at our parents' house," Lauren explained, pulling a flash drive from her coat pocket. "I saw the contract details. I saw the distribution agreement with Vortex Media. Ethan and Ryan built an entire business model around public humiliation pranks targeting women. They’ve done three smaller ones before, but your wedding was supposed to be their 'masterpiece'—the proof-of-concept that secured them a multi-million dollar series deal."
A nauseating wave of revulsion swept through me. "Smaller ones before?"
"Ethan’s ex-girlfriend," Lauren said grimly. "Remember Clara? The girl who supposedly 'went crazy' and moved to London? Ethan and Ryan orchestrated a fake cheating scandal at her birthday party, filmed her breakdown, and uploaded it anonymously. It got four million views. It funded Ryan’s media equipment."
My knees felt weak. I sank into one of the velvet armchairs behind the palm trees. "He’s a predator."
"He’s a psychopath," Lauren corrected bluntly. "He uses people, drains them for content, and discards them once he's monetized their pain. I’m his sister, Nora, but I couldn't watch him do this to you. Not after seeing how much you tried to make him happy."
"He told me I signed a media release form," I said, burying my face in my hands. "He threatened to sue my dad’s business if I try to block the video."
"He’s bluffing about the lawsuit, but he does have the legal release," Lauren said, sitting opposite me and leaning in close. "You did sign it. Ryan’s legal team made sure it was airtight. If they upload that video on Monday morning, it will go viral before any court can issue an injunction. And once it’s on the internet, it stays there forever."
"So how do I stop it?" I looked up, desperation in my eyes.
Lauren held up the sleek silver flash drive. "This is the master encryption key to Ryan’s private cloud server. It contains every raw video file, every audio track, every draft of the contract, and—most importantly—the recorded strategy meetings between Ethan, Ryan, and the executives at Vortex Media."
I stared at the little piece of metal. "How did you get that?"
"I know Ryan’s passwords because I used to manage his accounting," Lauren said with a bitter smile. "He’s lazy. He uses his dog's name for everything."
"If we delete the files—"
"If we delete them, they have backups on physical hard drives in Ryan’s studio," Lauren interrupted. "Deleting won't work. We can't just play defense, Nora. If you try to quietly pull the video down, Ethan will just re-edit it, spin a story about you being 'unstable,' and release it anyway to ruin your reputation."
"Then what do we do?"
Lauren leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a sharp, icy whisper. "We don't pull the video down. We let them host their massive live-stream launch party on Monday night. We let them invite their investors, their sponsors, and the media executives."
"And?"
"And we swap the video file twenty seconds before the stream goes live," Lauren said, her eyes burning with cold retribution. "Instead of the world watching a humiliated bride falling into a fountain, three million people—and their network investors—are going to watch the full, unedited documentary of Ethan and Ryan planning a fraud, committing extortion, and admitting to illegal surveillance."
I sat in silence as her words echoed in my mind.
For months, Ethan had treated me like a helpless pawn in his master plan. He thought I was soft. He thought I was weak enough to be manipulated by fear and debt.

He wanted a show. He wanted viral metrics.
"Show me how to access the server," I said.
