Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING OF RYAN

While Ethan’s life dissolved into financial ruin, his partner-in-crime, Ryan Miller, believed he could escape the carnage by sacrificing Ethan to the authorities.

Two weeks after the Glasshouse exposure, Ryan sat inside the sleek, glass-walled conference room of the District Attorney’s office. He was accompanied by a high-priced defense lawyer, attempting to secure a immunity agreement.

Across the table sat Deputy District Attorney Marcus Vance, alongside Detective Sarah Jenkins and Major Evelyn Reed—who had been brought in as a digital forensics consultant due to the complex network hacking and financial surveillance aspects of the case.

"Look," Ryan said nervously, wiping his sweaty palms on his jeans. "I was just the contractor! Ethan hired my agency to shoot a wedding package! He provided the releases! He told me his wife had agreed to the prank for a reality TV pitch!"

D.A. Vance adjusted his glasses, looking down at a thick stack of printed transcripts.

"Mr. Miller," Vance said smoothly, "that argument might have carried weight if we hadn't recovered the deleted slack channels from your agency's server."

Ryan's jaw dropped. "The... the deleted channels?"

Major Evelyn Reed leaned forward, sliding a tablet across the table.

"Digital forensics is a fascinating field, Mr. Miller," Evelyn said calmly. "You thought deleting your local drives wiped the data. But when you used our target network at the Glasshouse, your agency laptop automatically created mirrored diagnostic logs on the cloud."

She tapped the screen, playing an audio file from two months prior.

Ryan’s recorded voice boomed through the conference room speakers:

"...If we frame it as an accidental push, her insurance won't cover the dress damage, but who cares? We’ll use the secondary camera angle to make sure her reaction looks hysterical. If she tries to consult a lawyer afterward, I’ll release the locker-room audio tape we took at her bridal shower..."

Ryan turned ghost-white. He sank back into his chair, looking at his lawyer with wild, frantic eyes.

"Locker-room audio tape?" D.A. Vance asked, his eyes darkening. "You placed illegal audio recording devices inside a private venue during her private event without consent?"

"That... that was just a joke!" Ryan stammered, his voice rising in panic. "We never posted that tape! It was just leverage!"

"That is the textbook legal definition of felony wiretapping and attempted extortion, Mr. Miller," Vance said, closing the binder with a heavy thud. "You didn't just help Ethan perform a prank. You operated an ongoing criminal enterprise specializing in unconsented surveillance, character assassination, and digital extortion."

"I want a plea deal!" Ryan pleaded, grabbing his lawyer's sleeve. "Tell him I'll testify against Ethan! I'll tell them about the offshore accounts!"

"Mr. Carter has already signed a full confession," Vance replied coldly. "He gave us your physical hard drives an hour ago in exchange for a reduced sentence on his fraud charges. He threw you under the bus before you even walked into this room."

Ryan froze, realization dawning on him like a bucket of ice water.

The two men who had spent months plotting to ruin my life had ended up destroying each other in their desperate race to avoid prison.

"Officers," Vance said, gesturing toward two uniformed police standing near the door. "Place Mr. Miller under arrest."

The handcuffs clicked loudly around Ryan’s wrists. As he was led down the hallway of the District Attorney's office in tears, screaming at his attorney, Lauren stood near the elevators, watching her former employer being taken away.

She held her head high, completely unbothered.

Evelyn walked up beside Lauren, handing her a fresh cup of coffee. "You did the right thing, Lauren. It takes real courage to stand up to family when they're wrong."

Lauren took a sip of the coffee, watching the elevator doors close on Ryan. "He wasn't family. He was a parasite. My real family is Nora."
