Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE TOWER

The heavy mahogany doors of Conference Room A swung open with violent force.
Ivan Sterling marched into the room, wearing a sharp navy suit, his hair slightly unkempt, his face flushed with arrogance and impatience. Right behind him was Chloe Vance, holding a leather planner, looking frantic.
"What the hell is going on here?!" Ivan shouted, slamming his fist against the open doorframe. "Marcus! David! Why are you all here at eight-thirty?! My meeting wasn't scheduled until nine!"
He stopped dead in his tracks.
His eyes traveled down the length of the thirty-foot table, locking onto the head chair.
I was sitting in his seat.
My bandaged hand rested comfortably in my lap. Flanking me were Arthur Vance and three corporate security officers wearing black tactical suits.
"Nora?" Ivan choked out, his voice cracking violently as his brain struggled to process the scene. "What... what are you doing in my chair?!"
"It isn't your chair anymore, Ivan," I said softly, my voice completely relaxed.
Ivan’s face contorted into pure, rage-filled madness. He marched down the side of the table toward me, pointing a finger aggressively at my face.
"Get out of that chair!" Ivan yelled. "You crazy, hysterical bitch! Security! Get this woman out of my building right now! She’s trespassing! She attacked me at my house yesterday!"
The two tactical security guards stepped forward, instantly blocking Ivan's path, their hands resting firmly on their stun weapons.
"Mr. Sterling, step back," the lead security officer commanded sternly.
"Are you insane?!" Ivan shrieked, looking around the table at the eleven board members. "Marcus! David! Tell these guards who I am! I am the CEO of Vanguard Development! I built this damn company!"
Marcus Miller didn't look at Ivan. He lowered his head, staring silently at the glowing pages of the forensic audit binder before him.
"Marcus?" Ivan stammered, a cold trickle of sweat running down his temple. "David? Say something!"
David Sterling slowly looked up at his nephew. His eyes were filled with absolute disgust and pity.
"You didn't build anything, Ivan," David said quietly. "You stole fourteen million dollars from our operating funds. You forged my signature on the South End credit line. And you burned your wife's hand on a live grill."
Ivan gasped, taking a stumbling step back. His eyes darted to the sixty-inch monitor mounted on the wall.
The video was still playing.
The image of Ivan grabbing my wrist and slamming my palm onto the red-hot grate played in crystal-clear, horrifying detail.
Chloe Vance, standing by the door, took one look at the monitor and let out a horrified gasp, covering her mouth with her hand. She took two steps back toward the hallway, realizing instantly that the ship was sinking fast.
"That... that video is a fake!" Ivan stammered, his eyes darting frantically around the room like a trapped animal. "It's edited! She fell! She tripped over the grill! I was trying to catch her!"
"Save it for the grand jury, Ivan," Arthur Vance said calmly, stepping forward with a thick sheaf of legal papers.
"You..." Ivan spat, glaring at Arthur. "You're her lawyer! You can't do this! I am the primary equity holder! I hold fifty-one percent of Vanguard stock!"
"You held forty-two percent of non-voting operational shares, Ivan," Arthur corrected him with a cold, professional smile. "Your wife held fifty-eight percent of voting master shares through the Sterling-Vance Trust. And as of forty-five minutes ago, Mrs. Sterling exercised her majority power to convene an emergency shareholder vote."
Arthur held up a certified legal document.
"By a vote of fifty-eight percent to zero," Arthur announced loudly, "Ivan Sterling has been officially removed as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the Board, and Director of Vanguard Development."
"NO!" Ivan screamed, his voice echoing off the high glass walls of the skyscraper. "NO! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! THIS IS MY COMPANY! MY NAME IS ON THE BUILDING!"
"Not anymore," I said quietly, standing up from the executive chair.
I walked slowly around the table, stopping three feet away from him. I pulled a white sealed envelope from my suit jacket and offered it to him with my uninjured right hand.
"What is this?" Ivan rasped, his hands trembling violently as he refused to touch it.
"That is your formal notice of eviction from the estate on Highland Drive," I said clearly. "The house was purchased entirely through the Vance Family Trust three years ago. You have two hours to remove your personal clothing from the premises under police supervision."
"Nora... please..." Ivan whimpered, his terrifying rage suddenly evaporating into pathetic, sniveling desperation. He took a step toward me, his eyes wide with horror. "Nora, baby... listen to me. We can talk about this. I was drunk yesterday! I lost my temper! I'm sorry! I'll go to therapy! I'll do whatever you want!"
He reached out, trying to touch my face.
The lead security guard instantly grabbed Ivan’s arm, twisting it behind his back and forcing him down onto his knees on the carpeted floor.
"Get your hands off me!" Ivan shrieked, his forehead pressed against the floor. "Nora! Help me!"
I stood over my kneeling husband, looking down at him with total indifference.
"You told me yesterday that a successful man needs a woman who understands service, Ivan," I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear. "Now you are going to learn what happens when the woman who served you decides to rule."
Two uniformed police officers stepped into the conference room, pulling out steel handcuffs.
"Ivan Sterling," the lead detective announced loudly. "You are under arrest for felony assault, aggravated domestic battery, and corporate fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
