Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE KINGDOM

The arrest of Ivan Sterling outside the Vanguard Tower at nine-fifteen that morning was covered by every major news outlet in the state.
Press cameras flashed furiously as uniformed officers escorted the former CEO down the granite steps of the building, his hands cuffed behind his back, his head bowed to hide his face from the cameras.
By noon, the story was trending globally: Real Estate Tycoon Arrested for Brutal Assault on Wife After Embezzlement Scheme Uncovered.
While Ivan sat in a cold holding cell at the Central Police Precinct awaiting his arraignment, I remained in the executive suite on the forty-fifth floor, steering the company through the storm.
"Stock trading was temporarily halted at ten AM," Marcus Miller reported, stepping into my new corner office with a tablet. "When trading resumed twenty minutes ago, the price actually went up by seven percent."
I looked up from my desk, my bandaged hand resting comfortably in its silk sling. "Why did it go up?"
"Because Arthur Vance released a press statement announcing that you have taken over as interim CEO," Marcus smiled warmly, his previous hesitation entirely gone. "The market knows your father's reputation, Nora. They know the Vance name stands for financial stability. Wall Street trusts you far more than they ever trusted Ivan."
A soft knock sounded at my office door.
Arthur Vance stepped inside, holding his leather briefcase and a warm smile. "The District Attorney just finalized the bail terms for Ivan's arraignment hearing tomorrow morning."
"Did Ivan get bail?" I asked.
"The judge set bail at five million dollars, cash only," Arthur chuckled. "And since all of Ivan's personal bank accounts, credit lines, and corporate assets have been frozen by federal court order... he couldn't even raise five hundred dollars."
"What about his mother?" I asked, remembering Cynthia's smug face as she watched my hand burn.
"Cynthia Sterling tried to post her suburban home as collateral for Ivan's bail two hours ago," Arthur replied smoothly. "Unfortunately for her, our legal team served her with a fraud notice at one o'clock. The deed to her house was purchased using embezzled Vanguard funds. The state has seized the property. She is currently being evicted by the county sheriff."
I let out a long, slow breath, feeling a profound wave of peace wash over my chest.
"Where is she going to go?" I asked softly.
"I believe she is currently sitting on her suitcases on the sidewalk outside her gated community," Arthur said indifferently. "She was overheard complaining that no one was helping her with her luggage."
I smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached my eyes for the first time in ten years. "How poetic."
"There is one more matter, Nora," Arthur said, his expression turning serious as he pulled a blue legal document from his briefcase. "Chloe Vance—Ivan's former marketing director and mistress—is downstairs in the lobby. She is begging for five minutes to speak with you."
I looked at the blue document. "Is that her termination agreement?"
"And her confession statement," Arthur confirmed. "She signed a full affidavit detailing how Ivan forced her to process those illegal wire transfers in exchange for her career. She’s terrified she's going to prison."
I looked out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of my office, looking down at the bustling city below.
"Tell her to come up," I said quietly.
Two minutes later, Chloe Vance stepped into my office.
She was no longer wearing her designer clothes or proud, arrogant posture. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, her hair disheveled, her hands trembling violently as she held her purse against her stomach.
She looked at me—sitting behind the massive mahogany desk, wearing my tailored gray suit, my power absolute—and burst into fresh tears.
"Nora... please," Chloe sobbed, taking a hesitant step toward the desk. "Please don't ruin my life! Ivan lied to me! He told me you two were getting divorced! He told me you were crazy and unstable! He forced me to sign those accounting documents!"
I looked at Chloe for a long, silent moment.
I didn't feel rage toward her. I didn't feel hatred. I felt only pity for a woman who had allowed herself to be used by a pathetic man for a illusion of corporate power.
"Sit down, Chloe," I said calmly, gesturing to the leather chair across from my desk.
Chloe practically collapsed into the chair, wiping her nose with a crumpled tissue. "Are... are you going to send me to prison?"
"That depends entirely on you, Chloe," I said smoothly, resting my hands on the desk. "If you cooperate fully with the District Attorney's prosecution of Ivan, testify truthfully regarding every illegal transfer he ordered, and surrender every gift he bought you with company funds... I will instruct our legal team not to file civil charges against you."
Chloe gasped, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. "Yes! Yes! I'll testify! I'll give them everything! Texts, emails, receipts—everything!"
"Good," I said, sliding the blue termination agreement across the desk toward her. "Sign the resignation papers. You leave the building today. And if I ever see your face near Vanguard again, the deal is off."
May you like
Chloe snatched up the pen and signed her name instantly, nodding furiously. "Thank you, Nora... thank you so much..."
"Don't thank me, Chloe," I said coldly as she stood up to leave. "Thank the fact that I am nothing like my husband."
