Chapter 3 - The First Domino

By two o'clock in the morning, the master bedroom of the Vale estate felt less like a luxury suite and more like a command bunker during an active invasion.

I sat in a velvet armchair near the balcony, wrapped in a plush white robe after having carefully cleaned and bandaged the lashes across my back. The physical pain was sharp, but it was anchored by an icy, adrenaline-fueled focus.

Downstairs, the house was in pure, unadulterated chaos.

Adrian had been pacing the floor of his home office for three straight hours, his voice echoing through the grand hallway as he screamed into his phone at attorneys, bankers, board members, and public relations consultants. None of them had good news.

The door to the master suite swung open without a knock.

Adrian stormed inside, his tie undone, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes wild with a mixture of rage and mounting terror. Vanessa lingered in the doorway behind him, looking pale, her silk dress rumpled, holding a glass of wine with trembling fingers.

"What is Vane Global?" Adrian demanded, slamming the door shut behind him so hard the glass panes rattled. He held up his tablet, its screen displaying a blank, black corporate landing page with a single, embossed gold logo. "I spent the last two hours running background checks through my intelligence contacts in New York. There are no public filings! There are no SEC disclosures! The entire legal structure is hidden behind six layers of Swiss trust protocols!"

I took a slow sip of ice water from the glass on my side table, not even bothering to look up at him. "If you could look up my father’s company on Google, Adrian, he wouldn't be powerful enough to ruin you."

"You lied to me!" Adrian roared, marching toward my chair, his face contorted in fury. "For three years! You sat in this house, you let me pay for your clothes, you let my mother talk down to you at family dinners, you let the media call you a charity case—and you were sitting on an international cartel?!"

"I didn't lie to you," I said calmly, looking at him with absolute indifference. "When we met at that charity function in Boston, I told you my father worked in asset management. You didn't ask what assets he managed. You saw a quiet woman who didn't fight back, and your massive, unchecked ego filled in the blanks. You assumed I was poor because I didn't scream my last name from the rooftops like you do."

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice high-pitched and sharp with anxiety. "Adrian, stop arguing with her! Call the police! Tell them she’s sabotaging your business! She’s committing corporate extortion!"

I let out a short, soft laugh, turning my head to look at Vanessa.

"Call them, Vanessa," I said smoothly. "Ask the Chicago Police Chief to step in. Oh, wait... you can't. Because thirty minutes ago, my father’s legal team purchased the mortgage on the building that houses the 18th Precinct headquarters. If the Chief of Police steps foot on this property without a federal warrant, he’ll be auditing his own department's lease agreements by sunrise."

Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She looked at Adrian, waiting for him to tell her I was lying, waiting for him to assert his untouchable power.

But Adrian didn't say a word. The tablet in his hand slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the hardwood floor with a loud snap.

"Eleanor..." Adrian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, groveling register as he took a step closer, sinking slightly at the knees. "Eleanor, sweetheart... please. We can talk about this. We’re married. We took vows. Whatever happened downstairs... it was a mistake. I was stressed about the board meeting! Vanessa manipulated me!"

"What?!" Vanessa shrieked from the doorway, dropping her wine glass. The crystal shattered across the floor, dark red wine spreading across the rug like fresh blood. "Adrian! You told me you hated her! You told me she was a leech!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Adrian screamed, turning on her like a cornered rat. "Get the hell out of my house! Pack your bags and get out!"

"You can't kick me out!" Vanessa screamed back, her face turning crimson. "I'm carrying your heir! I'm pregnant!"

I sat back in my velvet chair, watching the two of them tear each other apart with the quiet, detached fascination of someone watching scorpions in a glass jar.

"She isn't pregnant, Adrian," I said quietly.

The shouting match stopped instantly. Both of them turned to stare at me.

Vanessa froze, the color completely draining from her face. "What... what did you say?"

I picked up my satellite phone, tapping the screen once to pull up a encrypted medical file that my father’s intelligence team had forwarded to my device fifteen minutes ago.

"Vanessa Reed," I read aloud from the screen. "Admitted to the Northwestern Memorial Reproductive Center six weeks ago for a routine elective procedure. According to the certified surgical records signed by Dr. Harrison... you had a total tubal ligation five years ago. You are biologically incapable of becoming pregnant."

Adrian slowly turned his head toward Vanessa, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "Is... is that true?"

Vanessa backed toward the door, her hands trembling violently, her confident facade crumbling into absolute panic. "Adrian... listen to me... she’s making it up! She hacked the files! She forged them!"

"The medical records are verified by the state board, Vanessa," I said, sliding my legs over the arm of the chair. "You faked the ultrasound results using a digital template you purchased online for two hundred dollars to force Adrian into filing for divorce before the quarter-end audit."

Adrian let out a guttural roar of pure, feral humiliation. He lunged toward Vanessa, but she let out a blood-curdling shriek, turned on her heel, and fled down the hallway, her high heels clicking wildly against the floor as she ran for the front doors.

Adrian stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his hands clutching his head as his entire world, built on lies, arrogance, and fake loyalties, began to turn into ash right before his eyes.

He turned slowly to look at me, dropping to his knees on the wooden floor, tears finally leaking from his eyes.

"Eleanor... please..." he sobbed, reaching toward my chair. "I’m sorry. I’ll do anything. I’ll fire the entire board. I’ll give you total control of Vale Enterprises. Just stop your father. Please..."

I looked down at him, my face completely expressionless.

"That was just the first domino, Adrian," I said softly. "My father hasn't even started yet."
