Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

At eight o'clock the following morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper that housed the headquarters of Vale Enterprises in downtown Chicago was surrounded by news vans, financial reporters, and dozens of bewildered employees standing on the sidewalk.

The trading floor had opened thirty minutes prior.

In those thirty minutes, Vale Enterprises stock had suffered the most catastrophic, violent devaluation in the history of the Chicago Stock Exchange. Rumors of insolvency, massive credit cancellations, and impending federal fraud indictments had caused institutional investors to dump sixty million shares in a panic selling frenzy.

Inside the high-floor executive boardroom, the scene was pure bedlam.

Twelve members of the board of directors sat around the forty-foot mahogany table, shouting over one another, slamming folders, and frantically checking their financial tracking tablets.

At the head of the table sat Adrian.

He was wearing a fresh suit, but no amount of expensive tailoring could hide the deep, dark circles under his eyes or the pale, sweaty sheen of his skin. His hands shook as he tried to organize his presentation papers.

"Quiet down!" Adrian yelled, slamming his hand onto the table. "Everyone sit down! We still control forty percent of the voting shares! If we hold the line until the afternoon session, we can issue a corporate bond buyback and stabilize the equity—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were suddenly thrown open.

Four men in immaculate, bespoke charcoal suits walked into the room. They moved with absolute, military precision. Leading them was a tall, silver-haired man in his late sixties with piercing blue eyes, an immaculate tailored coat, and a walking stick topped with a solid platinum handle.

Arthur Vane. My father.

Behind him walked two senior partners from Kirkland & Ellis, the most ruthless corporate litigation firm in North America, followed closely by me.

I wore a sharp, tailored ivory suit that completely covered the bandages on my back. My hair was swept up in a sleek, professional bun. I carried myself with absolute, effortless authority.

The boardroom went dead quiet.

Several older board members—men who had spent fifty years in global finance—stood up instantly, their eyes wide with shock as they recognized the silver-haired man leading the group.

"Arthur... Arthur Vane?" whispered Harold Sterling, the eldest board member, his voice trembling with reverent terror. "What... what are you doing here?"

Adrian glared at my father, trying desperately to rally his shattered ego. "Who the hell allowed you into this private meeting?! Security! Security, get these people out of here!"

One of the attorneys walking behind my father pulled a thick stack of legal documents from his leather briefcase and tossed it effortlessly onto the center of the mahogany table.

"Security won't be coming, Mr. Vale," the attorney said smoothly. "As of seven-thirty this morning, Vane Global acquired eighty-two percent of the outstanding debt obligations of Vale Enterprises from your primary creditors. Under Chapter 11 covenant enforcement rules, Vane Global has exercised its right to convert that debt into Class-A voting shares."

The attorney looked around the table at the terrified board members.

"Arthur Vane currently owns seventy-six percent of this company. This boardroom is no longer yours, Mr. Vale. It belongs to him."

Adrian’s breath hitched. He looked at Harold Sterling, then at the other board members. "Harold! Fight this! We can file an injunction! We can block the transfer!"

Harold Sterling looked at Adrian as if he had lost his mind. "Block Arthur Vane? Are you insane, Adrian? His holding company owns the bank that holds my family’s entire trust fund! If he wants this company, he can buy it, burn it to the ground, and build a parking lot over it before lunch!"

My father walked slowly to the head of the table. He didn't look at the board members. He didn't look at the attorneys. He stopped directly behind Adrian’s chair, resting both of his hands on the platinum handle of his walking stick, leaning down slightly.

"You hit my daughter," Arthur Vane said. His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was a cold, absolute fact that hung in the air like a blade hanging over a guillotine.

The entire boardroom froze. The board members looked between Adrian, my father, and me in utter bewilderment.

"What... what is he talking about?" one female director whispered.

My father raised his hand slightly. One of his aides immediately tapped a button on a remote control, lighting up the massive eighty-inch presentation screen mounted on the boardroom wall.

High-definition, crystal-clear security footage from the grand foyer of Adrian’s estate flashed onto the screen.

The video played silently, but the image was unmistakable: Adrian holding the leather riding crop, driving it violently down across my back while I knelt on the marble floor, blood soaking through my clothes, with Vanessa standing nearby smiling.

Gasps of horror erupted around the table. Two female directors pulled their hands up to cover their mouths. Harold Sterling turned to look at Adrian with pure, unadulterated disgust.

"You animal," Harold breathed, backing away from Adrian as if he carried a contagious plague.

Adrian slumped into his leather chair, his face entirely white, his eyes staring blankly at the nightmare playing on the screen over and over again.

My father leaned closer to Adrian’s ear.

"I didn't just buy your company, Adrian," my father whispered softly. "I bought your personal debt. I bought your mortgages. I bought the notes on your vehicles, your yacht, and your mother’s country club membership. By four o'clock today, you will not own the suit on your back."

My father stood up straight, turning his eyes to the board members.

"This meeting is adjourned," Arthur Vane announced calmly. "Vale Enterprises is being liquidated immediately. Every asset will be sold off to fund a private charitable foundation for victims of domestic violence, managed exclusively by my daughter, Eleanor."

He turned to look at me, a soft, proud smile touching his eyes.

"Ellie, my dear," my father said, extending his arm to me. "Let’s go home. The police are waiting downstairs to arrest Mr. Vale for felony aggravated assault."
