Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Unveiled

The black Maybach pulled up to the private medical wing of Saint Jude’s Hospital, a facility discreetly owned by the Crawford Foundation.

I carried Hazel through the rear entrance, where a team of top pediatric surgeons and dental specialists were already waiting. They didn't ask questions. They didn't request insurance cards. The moment my feet crossed the threshold, the hospital director himself bowed his head with absolute reverence.

"Ms. Crawford," Dr. Evans said, his voice quiet and precise. "Your father contacted us ten minutes ago. We have prepared the private surgical suite for young Hazel."

"Fix her mouth," I said, my voice empty of tears, cold as winter frost. "Ensure there is no permanent damage to her jaw or adult tooth buds. And document every bruise, every drop of blood, and every scrape on her body for the legal dossier."

"Consider it done, ma'am."

For three hours, I stood outside the glass viewing room while Hazel was gently sedated and her mouth was treated. The two baby teeth that Cassandra had violently knocked out were cleaned and safely stored as biological evidence.

Sitting on the leather couch in the waiting lounge, I looked down at my hands. They were still stained with my daughter’s blood.

Six years ago, I had walked away from the Crawford empire—the largest energy, shipping, and financial conglomerate in the Western Hemisphere—because I fell in love with Spencer Albright. I thought his ambition was passion. I thought his family’s humble corporate background meant they were grounded, honest people.

To prove my devotion, I accepted my father’s ultimate test: I dropped the Crawford name, severed all public ties with my family, and signed a strict non-disclosure agreement to live as a ordinary middle-class woman named Gwen Vance. My father, Marcus Crawford, had warned me: "A man who loves you for your modesty will treasure you. A man who loves you for my money will consume you."

Spencer had consumed everything. He spent six years treating me like a charity case he had rescued from obscurity, while my father quietly watched from the shadows, honoring my request not to interfere until I gave the word.

A soft click echoed in the hallway.

Thomas, my father’s chief executive security director, walked into the room. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his expression as unyielding as iron. Behind him stood two men carrying sleek aluminum briefcases.

"Ms. Gwen," Thomas said, bowing deeply. "Mr. Crawford has made the necessary arrangements. The international audits have been initiated. The Department of Justice has received the initial financial disclosures regarding Albright Enterprises."

"What is the current standing of Spencer’s firm?" I asked, looking up.

"Albright Enterprises is currently three hundred and fifty million dollars in debt," Thomas reported flatly. "They survived the last three fiscal quarters only because your father secretly backed their commercial paper through anonymous offshore subsidiaries—purely to keep your living conditions stable. Now that those guarantees have been withdrawn, the firm is technically insolvent as of twenty minutes ago."

A faint, cold smile touched my lips. "And the Grand Pinnacle Gala tonight?"

"The Pinnacle Gala is hosted by the Manhattan & Pacific Trust," Thomas replied. "Spencer believes he is attending to secure a two-hundred-million-dollar equity injection from the principal investor. What he does not know is that the principal investor... is you."

I stood up, walking toward the window that overlooked the city skyline.

"Has the styling team arrived?" I asked.

"They are waiting in Suite 400," Thomas said. "The custom Crawford signet necklace, the midnight-obsidian gown crafted in Milan, and the family crest seals are prepared. Your father sent a personal message."

"What did he say?"

"He said: 'Bring down the house, my daughter. And leave no stone unturned.'"

I turned back to Thomas, my eyes flashing with a fierce, unyielding fire. "Is Hazel’s recovery secured?"

"A private medical helicopter will transport her to your father’s estate in Aspen under heavy escort the moment she wakes," Thomas assured me. "She will be safe, happy, and surrounded by the finest care on earth."

"Good," I said, turning toward the door. "Then it’s time to prepare for the gala."
