Chapter 8 - The Ashes of Pride

By midnight, the gala had concluded, and the press was calling it the most explosive night in Beverly Hills society history.

The headlines were already dominating every major news network across the globe:

"SECRET CRAWFORD HEIRESS UNMASKED AT PINNACLE GALA" "ALBRIGHT ENTERPRISES LIQUIDATED IN THREE HOURS FOLLOWING CHILD ASSAULT SCANDAL" "CASSANDRA MILLER ARRESTED; SPENCER ALBRIGHT FACES FORENSIC FINANCIAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION"

I walked out of the hotel’s private rear exit into the quiet night air, wrapped in a plush cashmere coat over my gala gown.

Thomas opened the door of the lead Phantom. "Ms. Gwen, Spencer Albright is currently sitting on the curb outside the police perimeter. He has refused to leave the premises. He is begging for five minutes of your time."

I paused, looking at the dark street ahead.

"Give him three minutes," I said coldly. "In the secondary holding lounge."

Five minutes later, Spencer was brought into the quiet, soundproof VIP lounge of the hotel by two private guards.

He looked like a broken ghost. His tuxedo was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and swollen from weeping. The arrogant, controlling husband who had commanded the Bel Air mansion twelve hours ago was completely gone.

He fell to his knees three feet away from my chair, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Gwen... Gwen, please..." Spencer rasped, clutching his knees. "They’ve taken everything. The bank seized the house. The cars are impounded. My mother... my mother had a panic attack on the sidewalk and was taken to the county hospital... we have nowhere to go."

I sat in the high-backed leather chair, sipping a warm cup of chamomiles tea, completely unbothered by his agony.

"You had a home, Spencer," I said softly. "You had a loyal wife. You had a healthy daughter. You had a quiet, comfortable life. But you were so obsessed with status that you destroyed the only real thing you ever owned."

"I was stupid!" he screamed softly, banging his fist against the carpet. "I didn't know you were a Crawford! If I had known—"

"If you had known," I interrupted, setting my teacup down with a sharp clink, "you would have treated me like a queen for my money, while continuing to be a monster inside. My father was right. My silence revealed your true nature."

Spencer looked up at me, his face filled with pure, pathetic desperation. "What about Hazel? Please, Gwen, let me see my daughter! I’m her father!"

"You are a stranger who stood by and watched her bleed," I said, my voice dropping into a freezing register. "You lost the right to call yourself her father the second you told me to 'control that child' while her teeth lay on the floor."

I stood up, adjusting my coat.

"You will receive formal court summons tomorrow morning," I declared. "I am stripping you of all parental rights. You will not see Hazel, you will not hear her voice, and you will never come within five miles of my family again."

"Gwen! No! Don't do this to me!" Spencer cried out, trying to grab my shoes as I stepped past him.

Thomas stepped between us, his massive frame blocking Spencer completely.

"If you ever approach Ms. Crawford again, Mr. Albright," Thomas warned coldly, "the Crawford legal department will release the secondary evidence regarding your offshore tax evasion. You will spend twenty years in federal prison instead of just losing your money. Do you understand?"

May you like

Spencer slumped onto the carpet, weeping silently, completely destroyed.

I walked out of the room into the cool night, never looking back.
