Chapter 4 - The Financial Web

By midnight, the crime scene technicians had completed their collection process, packing up the shattered glass, the chemical residue, and the wine bottle into secure evidence lockers. The house was finally quiet, but sleep was an absolute impossibility.
I sat in my home study, surrounded by the cool glow of three computer monitors. The physical adrenaline of the evening had faded, replaced by a cold, analytical exhaustion. I poured myself a cup of black coffee—untouched by anyone else—and opened the digital files provided by my forensic accountant, Arthur Pendelton.
If Daniel and Vanessa were willing to resort to murder, it meant the financial disaster they were running from was far worse than a simple marital affair or petty embezzlement. Murder was an act of extreme desperation. People like Daniel—arrogant, status-obsessed corporate executives—only took that kind of catastrophic risk when they were facing total annihilation.
My fingers flew across the keyboard, cross-referencing Daniel’s corporate credit accounts with the property records of the holding companies I had identified over the past month.
At 1:15 AM, my phone rang. The screen displayed Arthur Pendelton’s name.
"Arthur," I answered immediately. "I hope you're awake for a reason."
"Claire, I just saw the news reports about police activity at your residence," Arthur’s voice was laced with deep concern. "Are you alright? What happened?"
"I'm safe, Arthur. Daniel and Vanessa tried to poison me tonight. They're currently in police custody."
There was a heavy, stunned silence on the line. "Good Lord, Claire... I... I don't even know what to say."
"Don't say anything about the crime, Arthur. Help me understand the money," I cut in sharply. "Why tonight? Why did they choose tonight to make their move?"
"I was just about to email you," Arthur said, the sound of papers rustling echoing over the speaker. "I spent the last six hours digging into the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands that we flagged last week. Daniel didn't just move money out of your joint accounts, Claire. He embezzled over twelve million dollars from his own firm, Sterling & Associates, through a series of fraudulent vendor invoices."
My eyes narrowed. "Twelve million? His firm's annual audit is scheduled for this Friday."
"Exactly," Arthur confirmed. "The audit was moved up by two weeks because of his upcoming promotion. If the audit went through, the board would have discovered the missing funds within forty-eight hours. But here is the kicker, Claire: the primary corporate guarantor on those fraudulent shell accounts isn't Daniel."
"What do you mean?" I asked, a sudden chill creeping down my spine.
"He forged your signature, Claire. He used your background as a former prosecutor and your position as the director of your family’s charitable foundation to establish the shell corporations. On paper, you are the sole managing director of Apex Global Holdings—the entity where all twelve million dollars ended up."
The full horror of their master plan clicked into place like the final pieces of a grotesque jigsaw puzzle.
They weren't just trying to kill me to get me out of the way. They were setting me up to take the fall for a massive corporate fraud scheme. If I died of a "sudden heart attack" tonight, the police and financial regulators would have investigated my death, discovered Apex Global Holdings in my name, found the stolen twelve million dollars, and concluded that I had killed myself or suffered a stress-induced cardiac arrest due to the pressure of my secret corporate crimes.
Daniel would have played the tragic, grieving husband—unaware of his wife’s secret financial corruption—and inherited my multi-million-dollar estate while walking away clean from his firm's missing funds. Vanessa would have stayed by his side as the loyal assistant, and within a year, they would have relocated to a non-extradition country with my inheritance and twelve million dollars in stolen corporate cash.
It was a perfect, sinister blueprint for complete destruction.
"Claire? Are you still there?" Arthur’s voice called out through the speaker.
"I'm here, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Send me every original document with my forged signature immediately. I want high-resolution scans of the notary seals and the transfer logs."

"I'm sending them now," Arthur replied. "Claire... what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to destroy them," I said, closing the laptop screen with a firm click. "Completely and utterly."
