Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The signed confession from Vanessa sent shockwaves through the district attorney's office. By 2:00 PM, the charge against Daniel Sterling was upgraded from attempted assault to attempted first-degree premeditated murder and grand-scale financial fraud.
I stood in the observation room behind the two-way mirror, watching as Detective Marcus Vance entered Interrogation Room A, where Daniel sat with his defense lawyer, Richard Sterling—a silver-haired, arrogant man in a tailored suit who looked completely confident that he could dismiss the charges by sunset.
"Detective Vance," Richard Sterling said, rising slightly from his chair. "We've been waiting here for hours. My client has provided a full statement explaining the tragic misunderstanding that occurred at his residence last night. We demand his immediate release on personal recognizance."
Marcus didn't sit down. He tossed a heavy blue file folder onto the table in front of Richard.
"Take a look at that, Counsel," Marcus said flatly.
Richard opened the folder with a dismissive air, but as his eyes scanned the first page, his confident posture slowly crumpled. Daniel leaned over his lawyer's shoulder to read the document. His eyes widened in absolute terror as he recognized Vanessa's signature at the bottom of a four-page sworn confession.
"This... this is completely inadmissible!" Richard stammered, his executive polish cracking. "My client’s assistant was clearly coerced into signing this under severe emotional distress!"
"Ms. Cross signed that confession in the presence of her attorney, and she has agreed to testify against Daniel in open court," Marcus stated, leaning his hands on the table and staring directly into Daniel’s trembling face. "She gave us the exact dates, times, and digital transaction receipts for when your client purchased the synthetic neurotoxin from an overseas supplier. She also gave us the access codes to the offshore accounts holding twelve million dollars stolen from Sterling & Associates."
Daniel slumped back into his chair, his face turned the color of ash. "Vanessa... that ungrateful bitch..."
"Careful, Daniel," Marcus warned. "Everything in this room is being recorded."
Richard turned to his client, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "Daniel... did you buy synthetic peptides online? Did you forge your wife's signature on corporate loans?"
"I... I had to!" Daniel screamed, suddenly snapping under the immense pressure. "The firm was going to ruin me! I was leveraged to the hilt! If I didn't get that promotion and secure those funds, I was going to prison anyway! Claire had millions in her personal trust! She didn't even care about the money! She was just sitting on it while I was drowning!"
Behind the two-way mirror, I listened to my husband's confession. There was no remorse in his voice—only the pathetic, toxic entitlement of a man who believed the world owed him everything he desired.
"Mr. Sterling," Marcus said, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted murder in the first degree, corporate fraud, grand larceny, and forgery. You will be held without bail pending your arraignment tomorrow morning."
Daniel was pulled to his feet. As the metal cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, he looked up at the two-way mirror, as if he instinctively knew I was standing right behind it.

"Claire!" he screamed at the glass, his voice echoing loudly through the small room. "Claire, I know you're in there! Please! Don't do this to me! I made a mistake! We can fix this! Claire!"
I turned my back on the mirror and walked out of the observation room, leaving his desperate screams behind me in the cold, silent hallway.
