Chapter 3 - THE POLICE REPORT

The police officers stepped into the reception hall with quiet, professional authority. The head officer, a veteran sergeant named Miller, scanned the room before walking directly toward the head table where Nick and I were standing with Judge Vance.
“Good evening,” Sergeant Miller said, adjusting his duty belt. “We received a call regarding a physical disturbance and assault at this location.”
“I made the call,” Nick said firmly, stepping forward and placing a protective arm around my waist. “My mother, Martha Bennett, snuck up behind my wife during our reception and cut off her hair with a pair of shears.”
Sergeant Miller looked at me, his eyes softening with sympathy as he noticed the jagged, ruined hair at the back of my head and the severed braid still lying on the polished hardwood floor where Martha had dropped it.
“Ma’am, are you injured?” the sergeant asked me.
“I... I don't think she cut my skin,” I stammered, my voice barely audible. “But she pulled my hair so hard my scalp is burning. And then she... she cut it all off.”
“We have full video footage of the incident, Sergeant,” Judge Vance added, stepping in. “Along with two hundred witnesses. The suspect fled the premises on foot toward the parking garage three minutes ago.”
Sergeant Miller turned to his partner. “Scan the perimeter and the lower parking garage. Locate Martha Bennett.”
As the officer hurried out, Evelyn Vance marched toward us, her silk dress rustling aggressively. “This is ridiculous! Richard, stop this madness immediately! Martha is Nick’s mother! It was a harmless prank—a wedding gag! You’re going to ruin our family’s reputation over some ruined hair!”
“Harmless?” Nick snapped, turning on Evelyn with a fierce glare that made the wealthy woman step back. “She humiliated my wife in front of every person we love! She spent years calling Clara poor, calling her unworthy, trying to drive us apart so she could siphon money out of your husband’s trust! It ends tonight, Evelyn.”
“Evelyn,” Judge Vance said, his voice icy. “You will leave this venue immediately. And when you return home, you will find that your access to the Vance Trust accounts has been frozen pending a full forensic audit.”
Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls. “You can’t do that!”
“I am the sole executor of the estate, Evelyn,” Judge Vance replied coldly. “I can, and I already have.”
Minutes later, muffled shouting echoed from the grand foyer outside the reception hall.
The doors swung open, and two police officers stepped inside, holding a frantic, disheveled Martha by her arms. Her designer dress was wrinkled, her makeup smeared with tears of anger, and her heels dragged against the marble floor.
“Let go of me!” Martha shrieked, struggling against the officers. “Do you know who I am?! Nick! Tell these men to unhand me right now! I am your mother!”
Nick walked slowly toward her, stopping just two feet away. He didn't look angry anymore; his face was a mask of cold, absolute disappointment.
“You’re not my mother anymore, Martha,” Nick said softly. “You’re just a criminal who assaulted my wife.”
“It was hair!” Martha screamed, her eyes bulging with rage as she glared at me. “She’s a nobody! A dirty little florist’s daughter who doesn't belong in our family! I did you a favor, Nick! I showed everyone what she really is!”

“Take her away, officer,” Sergeant Miller ordered.
As the police led Martha out of the hall in handcuffs, she screamed curses at me, her voice echoing down the corridors until the heavy doors slammed shut behind her.
