Chapter 9 - THE SENTENCING

Three months later, winter had settled over Chicago, covering the city in a thick blanket of white snow.

The final trial for Martha Bennett took place at the Dirksen Federal Building downtown. Due to the overwhelming mountain of evidence compiled by the federal auditors and the clear video footage of the assault, Martha’s legal team offered a guilty plea to grand larceny, wire fraud, and aggravated battery.

Nick, Sarah, and I sat in the second row of the federal courtroom.

Martha sat at the defense table, wearing a dark gray prison jumpsuit. She looked older, her face lined with stress, her hair graying at the roots. She did not look at us once.

Federal Judge Marcus Kane presided over the sentencing.

“Martha Bennett,” Judge Kane said sternly, reading from the legal documents on his bench. “You engaged in a prolonged pattern of financial theft, stealing nearly four hundred thousand dollars from a charitable trust meant to help low-income communities. You used those funds to gamble and support a lavish lifestyle you could not afford.”

Judge Kane adjusted his glasses, looking down at Martha with grave severity.

“Furthermore, when your scheme was exposed, you committed an act of public physical assault against your daughter-in-law on her wedding day—an act born out of arrogance, cruelty, and malice. This court sees no evidence of genuine remorse, only self-pity.”

Judge Kane picked up his gavel.

“On count one, grand larceny: you are sentenced to four years in federal custody. On count two, wire fraud: three years. On count three, aggravated battery: two years. Sentences to run consecutively. Total sentence: nine years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Greenville, Illinois. In addition, full restitution of three hundred and eighty thousand dollars is ordered.”

BANG.

The gavel fell, echoing like a thunderclap through the courtroom.

Martha collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably as federal marshals stepped forward to place her in handcuffs.

As she was led out through the side doors toward the holding cells, Sarah let out a soft breath, resting her head on Nick’s shoulder.

“It’s over,” Sarah whispered. “It’s finally over.”

Nick put his arm around his sister, then turned to me, kissing the top of my short hair. “Yes, it is. Now we can finally live our lives.”
