Chapter 3 - The Audit of Sins

The financial documents displayed on the fifty-foot projection screen were clear, undeniable, and catastrophic.

For months, the Hale family had projected an image of untouchable, old-money wealth. They drove custom Bentley motorcars, spent summers in Martha's Vineyard, and sat on the boards of the city's most prestigious charities. But up on that screen, stripped of their velvet coats and polished jewelry, lay the decaying, rotting truth of their financial reality.

"Three months ago," Sarah Pierce announced, her voice echoing clearly across the hushed crowd, "Hale Global Logistics issued seven corporate checks totaling $1.2 million to the Grand Regent Hotel, floral contractors, and luxury caterers to secure tonight's venue."

Sarah paused, tapping a key on her tablet. A massive red stamp materialized across the screen over every single check image: RETURNED – INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.

The crowd erupted into furious, shocked whispers.

"Every single corporate check issued by the Hale family bounced," Sarah revealed. "The Hale family accounts were frozen by the Treasury Department forty-eight hours ago due to pending tax fraud investigations. The only reason this wedding happened tonight—the only reason the doors opened, the champagne was poured, and the orchestra played—is because my client, Harper Vance, personally underwrote every invoice through her private holding company, Vance Capital."

Eleanor’s face went from pale to a deep, dangerous purple. "You... you paid the vendors?"

"I paid all of them," I said, stepping toward my mother-in-law. "I paid the hotel $400,000 to keep the doors open. I paid the caterers $150,000 so your guests wouldn't be served water and bread. I paid the florists, the musicians, the security teams, and the dressmakers. Every single drop of champagne you drank tonight was bought with my money."

I gestured to the shredded lace of my gown, the blood drying on my skin. "I funded this entire fairytale. And you tried to rob me before the cake was even cut."

Carter stumbled toward me, his hands outstretched in a desperate plea. "Harper... baby, please... listen to me. We can fix this! We’re married! We’re a team! We can handle the tax investigation together—"

"We aren't a team, Carter," I said coldly, pulling my hand back from his reach. "And we aren't married."

Sarah pulled another set of documents from her briefcase and handed them to the state court reporter, who stamped them with an official seal.

"As of 8:15 p.m. this evening," Sarah declared, "a petition for immediate annulment based on fraud, physical assault, and material breach of contract was electronically filed with the State Superior Court. Because Carter Hale executed the Confession of Judgment forty-five minutes ago through his violent actions, the temporary restraining order is already active. Carter Hale is legally prohibited from coming within five hundred feet of Harper Vance, her assets, or her properties."

"You can't annul a marriage on the same night!" Eleanor yelled, her voice breaking into a desperate rasp. "It’s not legal!"

"It is when the marriage was entered into under fraudulent pretenses," Sarah shot back. "Which brings us to the second part of tonight’s agenda: The Audit."

Sarah pointed to the armed federal marshals standing at the rear of the room. The marshals stepped forward, their official badges gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

"Mr. Brooks Hale," one of the marshals called out, his voice sharp and clinical.

Brooks flinched as if he had been shot. He tried to scramble backward behind his mother, but the crowd parted around him like the Red Sea, leaving him completely exposed.

"Brooks Hale," the marshal continued, pulling a folded warrant from his belt. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, illegal offshore money laundering, and the unauthorized conversion of corporate assets belonging to Hale Global Logistics."

"NO!" Eleanor screamed, throwing her arms over her younger son. "No! You can't touch him! He’s a Hale! This is a private family matter!"

"It ceased to be a private family matter when your son stole $8.5 million from the Hale Global employee pension fund to cover his debts with the Russian mafia," I revealed, my voice echoing over the microphone.

A collective shriek of horror echoed through the room. Several high-ranking board members of Hale Global Logistics who were sitting in the crowd stood up, their faces twisted in absolute terror.

"HE DID WHAT?!" shouted Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member of Hale Global. "OUR PENSION FUND?!"

"It’s true, Arthur," I said, looking directly at the elderly board member. "Two weeks ago, my forensic accounting team uncovered a secret offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under Brooks Hale’s name. Over the last fourteen months, Brooks has been systematically draining the employee pension fund to pay off his markers at the Bellagio and various underground sportsbooks."

"You lying bitch!" Brooks screamed, suddenly breaking away from his mother. Driven by pure, unadulterated terror, he reached into his jacket, pulled out a heavy brass paperweight he had stolen from the bridal suite, and rushed toward me. "YOU DESTROYED MY LIFE!"

Before Brooks could take three steps, the lead tactical contractor stepped into his path. With a motion so fast and fluid it looked rehearsed, the contractor grabbed Brooks’s wrist, twisted it back until the bone popped, and slammed him face-first onto the marble floor.

The heavy brass paperweight fell from his hand, clattering harmlessly against the floor.

"GET OFF HIM! GET OFF MY SON!" Eleanor shrieked, clawing at the contractor’s arm, but another guard easily held her back.

The federal marshals stepped in, pulling Brooks up from the floor, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. Brooks sobbed hysterically, blood dripping from his nose onto his crumpled tuxedo shirt.

"Carter! Mom! Help me! Don't let them take me!" Brooks cried out as the marshals began dragging him toward the ballroom exit.

Carter stood frozen, looking back and forth between his weeping, hand-cuffed brother, his screaming mother, and me. The reality of his complete and utter ruin was finally settling over his arrogant mind.

"Harper..." Carter whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "What... what have you done to us?"

"I didn't do anything to you, Carter," I whispered back, leaning in close so only he could hear. "You did this to yourselves. I just gave you enough rope to hang your entire empire."
