Chapter 5 - The Eviction of Pride

By 10:30 p.m., the Grand Regent ballroom had been completely emptied of guests.

The elite of high society had fled into the night, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive wreckage of the Hale family. The stories were already breaking across national financial news outlets: HALE GLOBAL LOGISTICS ON BRINK OF COLLAPSE AFTER BRIDAL BRAWL, BROOKS HALE ARRESTED FOR PENSION FRAUD, CARTER HALE FIRED ON WEDDING NIGHT.

Inside the ballroom, only a handful of people remained: myself, my legal team, my private security detail, and the shattered remnants of the Hale family.

Eleanor sat slumped in a gold-gilded chair, her blood-red gown trailing across the floor, looking ten years older than she had three hours ago. Carter was pacing back and forth near the shattered champagne glass, frantically dialing every contact on his phone.

"Hello? Mark? It’s Carter... yes, I know what the news is saying, but listen, I need a short-term bridging loan... hello? Hello?!"

Carter threw his phone against the wall. It shattered into pieces against the mahogany paneling. "Dammit! He hung up on me! Everyone is hanging up on me!"

"Because you are toxic, Carter," I said, sitting calmly at a table near the front, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea brought to me by the hotel staff. I had wrapped a warm black cashmere coat over my ruined dress, hiding the shredded lace and bruised skin. "No one in this city is going to lend money to a man who is facing federal indictments and immediate foreclosure."

Eleanor slowly lifted her head, looking at me with eyes filled with pure, unadulterated venom. "You planned this. You planned every single second of this, didn't you?"

"I didn't plan your son's violent temper, Eleanor," I replied, taking a sip of tea. "I didn't force Brooks to steal $8.5 million from innocent dockworkers. I didn't force Carter to choke me for a key. You built a foundation of greed, entitlement, and fraud. All I did was stop holding up the walls."

Sarah Pierce walked back into the ballroom, holding a sleek black laptop. She set it down in front of me and flipped the screen toward Eleanor and Carter.

"It is currently 10:45 p.m.," Sarah announced. "The two-hour grace period for the $30 million debt call has officially expired without payment. Vance Capital has executed its contractual right of judicial foreclosure."

Sarah tapped a key on her laptop.

"As of fifteen minutes ago," Sarah continued, "a court-appointed referee took control of Hale Global Logistics headquarters. All shipping containers, deep-water vessels, and transport trucks have been seized. Furthermore, because Carter Hale pledged his personal assets as collateral for the corporate credit lines..."

Sarah pulled up a secondary legal document.

"...the primary Hale family estate on Bellevue Avenue—including the house, the land, the vehicles, and all fine art inside—has been legally attached to satisfy the outstanding debt."

Eleanor stood up so fast her chair fell backward. "WHAT?! MY HOUSE?! YOU CAN'T TAKE MY HOUSE! THAT IS MY FAMILY HOME!"

"It was your family home," Sarah corrected her. "Now it is an asset owned by Vance Capital. And my client has instructed us to secure the premises immediately."

"You monstrous bitch!" Eleanor screamed, lunging toward me.

Before she could take two steps, two female tactical contractors stepped into her path, firmly grabbing her by her arms and locking her in place.

"Mrs. Hale," the lead contractor warned, "if you attempt to assault Ms. Vance, you will join your son Brooks in county jail within thirty minutes."

Eleanor withered in their grip, sobbing hysterically. "My home... my beautiful home... where am I supposed to go?!"

"I suggest a budget motel on the highway," I said, setting my teacup down with a soft clink. "Because as of midnight, the locks on Bellevue Avenue are being changed."

Carter fell to his knees in front of me, his hands clasped together in a desperate, pathetic gesture of supplication. The arrogant predator who had torn my dress three hours ago was gone, replaced by a broken, weeping child.

"Harper... please..." Carter sobbed, tears and sweat soaking his face. "Please don't do this to me. I love you! I swear to God I love you! I made a terrible mistake! My mother pushed me! Brooks pushed me! I was scared! Please... give me one more chance! We can go back to how things were!"

I looked down at the man I had once believed was my soulmate. I felt no anger. I felt no hatred. I felt only a profound, liberating disgust.

"You never loved me, Carter," I said softly, looking into his bloodshot eyes. "You loved my money. You loved the status my name gave you. You loved the idea of taking a strong, successful woman and bending her until she broke."

I leaned down, looking him straight in the eyes.

"But I don't break, Carter. I break things."

I stood up, adjusting my cashmere coat around my shoulders. I turned to Sarah and my security team.

"Clear the room," I ordered calmly. "And bring the blowtorch for the safe. I want my father’s foreign bonds transferred to my private trust before midnight."
