Chapter 8 - The Evidence Unveiled

The room went dead silent. Arthur Cross looked as though he had suffered a mild stroke; he stumbled sideways, clutching the edge of a leather chair for support as the terrifying reality of his situation set in.

"Richard... Mr. Hart..." Arthur gasped, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "There must be some misunderstanding. My son... Daniel... he married your daughter?"

"He married her," Eleanor Hart spoke up, her voice slicing through the air like a razor blade. "And twenty-four hours later, he watched his mother spray industrial bleach into her eyes, held her arms behind her back to prevent her from escaping, and then abandoned her in an emergency room while filing a fraudulent police report."

"No!" Daniel yelled, panic breaking through his arrogance as he rushed toward the table. "That's a lie! She's lying! She grabbed the spray bottle herself! She's emotionally unstable, Mr. Hart! I swear on my life—"

My mother didn't argue. She simply pressed a button on the remote control sitting in front of her.

The massive eighty-inch display screen on the boardroom wall clicked on.

The video played in glorious, uncompressed 4K resolution with crystal-clear audio.

The entire boardroom filled with the sharp, cold voice of Vivian Cross:

"A filthy, penniless woman like you will never belong in this family."

The screen clearly showed Vivian raising the bottle. It showed the white chemical mist spraying directly into my face. It showed me screaming, turning, reaching for Daniel. And then it showed Daniel Cross stepping into the frame, grabbing my shoulders, pulling my arms back, and pinning me still as his mother sprayed my eyes a second time.

The audio captured his icy whisper perfectly:

"Stop being dramatic. It’s just cleaner."

Arthur Cross covered his face with both hands, letting out a horrific groan of despair.

Daniel stood frozen, staring at the screen as if looking at his own execution. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. His hands began to shake violently.

"That... that video..." Daniel stammered, his eyes wide with terror. "Where did you get that?"

"My daughter installed a security camera on your front porch three weeks ago, Daniel," my father said, walking slowly down the length of the table toward him. "Every second was uploaded to an off-site server."

My mother clicked the remote again.

An audio file began to play—the recording from the Grandview Club two nights ago. Daniel’s own loud, arrogant voice echoed through the high-end speakers:

"In fact, she had a bit of a breakdown yesterday morning... My mother had to discipline her a bit—used a little household cleaner to put her in her place... I had to hold her down just to keep her from tearing up the foyer rugs. I dumped her at an urgent care facility down the street..."

Daniel sank into a chair, his face buried in his hands, trembling uncontrollably.

"As of 4:00 PM today," my mother said officially, opening a red legal folder, "the Metro Nashville Police Department has issued arrest warrants for Vivian Cross for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and for you, Daniel Cross, for felony accomplice to aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and filing a false police report."
