Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Cross Empire

Arthur Cross fell to his knees beside the boardroom table, tears streaming down his aged face as he looked up at my father.
"Mr. Hart, please!" Arthur begged, his voice broken. "My wife... my son... they were foolish! They didn't know! If we had known she was your daughter—"
"If you had known she was my daughter," I interrupted, standing up from my chair and looking down at Arthur, "you would have treated her like royalty. But because you thought I was poor, because you thought I had no power and no voice, you treated me like an animal. That is who your family truly is, Arthur."
My father checked his watch. The digital clock on the wall read 4:58 PM.
"In two minutes," my father said softly, "the deadline for your home mortgage default expires. Hartwell Capital hereby formally rejects your application for the forty-million-dollar credit facility."
Marcus Vance stepped forward, handing Arthur a legal notice. "And as primary creditor, Hartwell Capital has filed for immediate emergency receivership over Cross Hospitality assets due to corporate officer moral turpitude and insolvency. All Cross hotel properties are seized as of 5:00 PM today."
Daniel looked up from his hands, his eyes bloodshot, his face contorted in absolute panic. "Maya! Please! I loved you! I was just trying to keep peace with my mother! You can't destroy my family like this!"
"You destroyed your family the second you chose to hold my arms, Daniel," I said, my voice steady and unwavering. "I loved you. I would have given you everything. I would have saved your father's business with my own funds. But you proved that your love was conditional, weak, and cruel."
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
Four uniformed police officers stepped into the room, led by Detective Miller from the domestic violence division.
"Daniel Cross?" Detective Miller asked, holding up a pair of steel handcuffs.
Daniel backed away toward the window, shaking his head frantically. "No! Wait! You don't understand! This is a domestic dispute! We can settle this!"
"You have the right to remain silent," Detective Miller stated calmly, grabbing Daniel's wrist and twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency. The heavy steel cuff clicked shut around his wrist with a sharp, final sound.

At the same time, two miles away at the Cross estate, two police cruisers pulled up the long circular driveway. Vivian Cross was standing in her garden, holding a bouquet of freshly cut roses, when officers stepped onto the porch and informed her she was under arrest for felony assault.
Her screams of outrage could be heard across the entire neighborhood as she was handcuffed in her silk dress and escorted into the back of a marked police car in front of her high-society neighbors.
