Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Baltic Sea

The heavy double oak doors at the top of the grand staircase creaked open.

Slowly, deliberately, a man stepped out onto the carpeted landing, looking down at the sixty guests frozen in the ballroom below.

He wore a dark tactical coat over a charcoal suit. His face was weathered, his short dark hair silvered at the temples, and a deep, jagged scar ran from his right ear down to the corner of his jawline.

Beside him, two armed men in plain dark uniforms held Fiona Vale by her arms. She was weeping silently, her crimson silk dress disheveled, her eyes fixed on the floor in absolute shame.

Julian Dre leaned over the marble balustrade, his dark gray eyes—the exact same shade as Matthias’s—sweeping over the crowd before resting squarely on his father.

"Merry Christmas, Father," Julian said.

His voice was lower and rougher than Matthias’s, carrying the heavy weight of a man who had survived six years in the shadows of the earth.

A collective gasp swept through the guests. Two elderly women near the punch bowl fainted, while several board members took immediate steps toward the exit doors, only to find four armed men in dark uniforms standing silently behind the closed threshold.

"Julian..." Thomas Dre breathed, his voice stripped of its legendary authority. "How... how are you alive?"

"You should ask your favorite son," Julian replied smoothly, descending the staircase one slow step at a time. "He paid the vessel engineer sixty thousand dollars to make sure I never left the engine room."

Every eye in the room whipped around to stare at Matthias.

Matthias backed further against the Christmas tree, his face as pale as a corpse, sweat glistening on his forehead under the bright chandelier lights.

"That's a lie!" Matthias shouted, his voice shrill and desperate. "He's an impostor! Security, shoot him! Get him out of my house!"

None of the security personnel moved. The eight guards stationed around the perimeter of the ballroom were men Julian had hired and placed inside the Dre estate over the past four months through a third-party security firm.

Julian reached the bottom step, stopping ten feet away from his brother.

He didn't look at Matthias first.

Julian turned his head slowly toward me.

His gray eyes softened slightly as he took in my velvet dress, my advanced pregnancy, and the calm, unshakeable dignity with which I stood beside the tree.

"You must be Evelyn," Julian said quietly, inclining his head with deep respect. "My legal team owes you a debt of gratitude, sister-in-law. Without the financial files you pulled from Matthias’s private server last week, we wouldn't have been able to freeze his Cayman holdings before tonight."

Matthias stared at me in total, speechlessly horrified realization.

May you like

"You..." Matthias whispered, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "You were working with him?"

"I wasn't working with a ghost, Matthias," I said coldly, placing both hands over my belly. "I was protecting my daughter from a murderer."
