Chapter 5 - The Cayman Ledgers

The silence in the ballroom was so profound that the soft ticking of the grand grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer strikes.
"Evelyn, how could you?!" Eleanor Dre shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings as she pointed a manicured finger at me. "You brought this ruin into our home! You betrayed your own husband!"
"Your husband betrayed this family six years ago, Eleanor," Julian interjected smoothly, pulling a thick leather folder from his inner coat pocket. "And he didn't do it alone."
Julian flipped the folder open, tossing a stack of certified legal documents onto the heavy mahogany table nearby.
"Six years ago, Matthias and Fiona Vale established an offshore shell entity named Vanguard Maritime Logistics in Grand Cayman," Julian explained, his voice ringing clearly across the room. "They used that entity to siphon thirty percent of Dre Maritime’s primary shipping revenues into private accounts. When I discovered the discrepancy on the Baltic routes in 2020, Matthias knew I was three days away from presenting the audit to the board."
Julian took a step closer to Matthias, his scarred face illuminated by the flickering wall sconces.
"So he hired a sabotage crew," Julian continued, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp growl. "He blew up the engine room of the MV Baltic Sovereign. Three crewmen died that night, Father. I survived only because the chief officer pulled me through an emergency scuttle before the hull sank."
Thomas Dre stumbled toward the table, picking up the certified bank ledgers with trembling hands.
As his eyes scanned the signatures at the bottom of the wire authorizations—signatures bearing Matthias Dre’s distinct hand and Fiona Vale’s personal witness seal—the old patriarch’s face collapsed into absolute, crushing age.
"Matthias..." Thomas whispered, looking up at his youngest son with eyes filled with profound disgust and heartbreak. "Is this true?"
Matthias looked at his father, then at the guests watching him, then at the armed men standing at every exit.
The arrogant, polished facade he had maintained for four years fell completely away.
"They were going to give you the chairmanship, Julian!" Matthias suddenly screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he pointed a trembling finger at his brother. "Father was going to hand you the entire empire! I worked eighteen hours a day for ten years, and he treated me like an assistant! You didn't deserve it! You never deserved it!"
"So you tried to kill your brother?" I asked, my voice slicing through his hysterical outburst.
Matthias turned his wild gaze onto me.

"Shut up!" he shrieked, taking a sudden, violent step toward me. "You worthless, ungrateful—"
Before he could take a second step, Julian moved with blinding speed.
