Chapter 2 - The Silent Sanction

The realization hit like a physical blow. Mason wasn’t a passive bystander. He was the enforcer.
While my mother, Evelyn, was physically forcing sharp fish bones toward Hannah’s face, my younger brother had been blocking her escape route and stripping her of her only lifeline. Six relatives—my aunts, my uncle, my cousins—had watched the scene play out, serving as a silent wall of witnesses meant to break my wife’s spirit.
"He took your phone?" I asked, my voice barely audible, vibrating with a cold, focused fury I had never felt before.
Hannah nodded slowly, her pale face illuminated by the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room. "He took it from the kitchen counter before anyone sat down. When I tried to stand up, he put his hand on my shoulder and pushed me back down into the chair. When I tried to run for the back door... he stepped into the doorway and locked it from the inside."
I squeezed my eyes shut for a brief second, calculating the sheer level of premeditation. This wasn't a sudden outburst or a family argument that had spiraled out of control. This was a coordinated, deliberate assault planned against an eight-month-pregnant woman inside her own home.
"Did anyone else touch you?" I asked.
"Your Aunt Beatrice held my arms," Hannah whispered, a tear slipping down her pale cheek. "She told me I was being ungrateful for your mother’s cooking. She said a proper wife accepts the discipline of her elders."
I took out my phone, unlocked it, and immediately dialed a local locksmith service that advertised twenty-four-hour emergency dispatch.
"I need a complete lock replacement for a residential property," I told the dispatcher quietly. "Four exterior doors, including the garage side entry. High-security deadbolts with smart keypads. I want the physical keys re-keyed on the spot, and I need a technician at my house within the hour."
After providing my address and payment details, I hung up and looked back at Hannah.
"The locks are being changed right now," I said. "No one from my family will ever set foot inside our home again."
"Julian..." Hannah said, her hand reaching out from under the blanket to grab mine. Her grip was surprisingly strong, desperate. "Your mother has the deed to the property in her safe-deposit box. She’s going to use the house against us."
I sat down on the edge of the hospital bed and held her trembling hand with both of mine. "My father left that house to both of us, Hannah. The deed in her safe is a copy. The original title is registered at the county clerk's office under my name. She has lied to everyone for years to maintain control, but her control ends tonight."
Before Hannah could answer, the door to the hospital room opened.
Officer Ramirez, a tall, stern-faced municipal police officer, stepped inside with a digital audio recorder clipped to his belt. Behind him stood Dr. Aris, who gave me a silent, firm nod.
"Mr. Julian Vance?" Officer Ramirez asked. "Dr. Aris informed me that your wife was brought into the emergency bay following a domestic assault involving physical restraint and forced ingestion of sharp objects. I need to take both of your statements."

"I have photos of the scene, Officer," I said, pulling out my phone and unlocking the album I had created just hours ago. "And my wife is ready to tell you everything."
I moved to the side of the bed, keeping my hand anchored to Hannah’s, as the police officer pressed record.
