Chapter 5 - The Medical Audit

At 8:00 AM the following morning, I returned to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital carrying a small bag of clean clothes, fresh toiletries, and a hot cup of chamomile tea for Hannah.

The two security guards posted outside her door greeted me with respectful nods.

When I stepped inside Room 412, Hannah was sitting up in bed, her face looking noticeably less pale. Beside her stood Dr. Aris and a senior forensic medical examiner, Dr. Karen Vance (no relation), who held an iPad displaying detailed x-rays and soft-tissue scans.

"Good morning, Julian," Dr. Aris said gently. "We’ve just completed the full head-and-neck imaging for Hannah."

I set the tea down on the bedside table and took Hannah’s hand. "How is she? How is the baby?"

"The baby’s heart rate is excellent, and ultrasound scans show normal amniotic fluid levels," Dr. Aris reassured us. "However, Dr. Karen has identified something critical regarding the older injury Hannah mentioned last night."

Dr. Karen flipped the iPad screen toward me, highlighting a faint, healed stress fracture along Hannah’s lower left rib cage.

"This fracture occurred approximately six to eight weeks ago," Dr. Karen explained, pointing a stylus at the bone density scan. "It matches a high-impact blunt trauma consistent with being forcefully slammed against a sharp, rigid wooden corner—such as the edge of a heavy dresser."

My chest tightened as I recalled the entry in my mother's journal: September 04: Pushed her away from the nursery stairs.

"This fracture was never properly set or treated," Dr. Karen continued, her voice filled with professional outrage. "It healed improperly under continuous physical stress. If Hannah had been subjected to any further blunt impact to her abdomen during dinner last night, this fractured rib could have easily punctured her uterine wall."

Hannah closed her eyes, a shudder running through her frame. "She knew... She knew my rib was hurt. Every time she came over after September fourth, she would poke my left side with her finger whenever I didn't answer her questions fast enough."

I felt an icy wave of absolute fury wash through my entire body. My mother hadn't just bullied Hannah. She had intentionally exploited a physical injury to maintain torture-like control over her.

"Dr. Karen," I said, my voice shaking with restrained rage. "Can you certify these forensic imaging results and submit them directly to Officer Ramirez?"

"They have already been uploaded to the district attorney’s domestic violence task force," Dr. Karen confirmed. "Because Hannah is in her late third trimester, felony charges of aggravated battery on a pregnant person carry a mandatory enhancement under state law."

"Thank you, Doctor," I said.

When the medical staff left the room, I pulled my mother’s leather-bound notebook from my coat pocket and placed it gently on Hannah’s lap.

Hannah looked down at the handwritten pages, her eyes widening in sheer shock as she read through the dates, the timestamps, and the detailed notes of her own torment.

"You found this?" she whispered.

"In her purse," I said. "She was logging every visit, every attack, and every time she used her key while I was at work. She even logged Mason’s involvement."

Hannah looked up at me, tears brimming in her soft brown eyes. "Julian... your mother is a powerful woman in this city. She knows judges, politicians, and police captains. What if they try to bury this?"

May you like

I took her hands in mine and pressed my lips against her knuckles.

"My mother spent her entire life building a illusion of power based on fear and family secrets," I swore to her. "She’s about to discover what happens when those secrets are exposed to the light."
