Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Mirror

My heart violently hammered against my ribs.

If I moved now, the flashlight beam would catch me instantly on the open stone terrace. If I stayed, the man with the gun would walk through the sliding glass door and find me pinned against the cliff edge.

I had no weapon. I had no cover except the concrete planter and the dark night air.

"It's just the wind," Madison said impatiently inside the room, grabbing the man's arm to pull him back toward the safe. "The terrace door latch is broken. The sea breeze rattles the glass all the time."

"I don't like it," the man muttered, but he didn't pull the gun. He slowly lowered his flashlight beam back toward the safe. "We have twenty minutes before the security company sends a physical patrol to verify the offline sensor."

"They won't send anyone," Chloe said with cold confidence. "I forged Victoria’s digital signature on the alarm cancellation form twenty minutes ago. As far as the monitoring center knows, she tripped the system herself and turned it off."

A cold rage washed over me.

Chloe hadn't just helped Madison break in. She had committed identity theft, system fraud, and corporate espionage in one clean motion.

I backed away from the terrace edge, inch by agonizing inch, slipping into the shadow of the heavy stone staircase that led up to the second-floor master balcony.

I reached into my pocket, my fingers wrapping around my personal keyring.

It didn't have the house key—Madison had been right about that. But it had something better.

It had the master remote for the estate’s secondary backup generator—a heavy-duty industrial unit installed deep inside the cliffside garage to power the environmental control systems for my grandmother’s art collection.

I climbed the stone stairs softly, my eyes fixed on the house above.

I reached the master bedroom balcony, slipped through the unlocked sliding glass door, and stepped onto the dark hardwood floor of my home.

The air inside smelled faintly of my grandmother’s favorite lavender perfume—a detail I had preserved over the past three years. Seeing these criminals tramping through her sanctuary in dirty boots made my blood boil.

I moved silently down the second-floor corridor toward the main gallery bridge.

Below me, the grand living room was dark, save for the pale moonlight filtering through the sky-high glass atrium.

I stepped into the service closet near the elevator, reached for the backup generator override panel, and pulled out my phone.

I dialed Captain Miller’s direct line.

"Victoria?" Miller answered on the first ring. "What’s your status?"

"They're in the lower study," I whispered, keeping my eyes on the living room floor below. "There are three of them. Madison, Chloe Vance, and a hired hand carrying a concealed firearm. They are currently attempting to breach the bedrock vault."

"A firearm?" Miller's tone instantly hardened. "We are moving the units up the drive right now."

"No!" I commanded softly. "If they hear sirens, they'll use the cliff stairwell to escape down to the beach, or worse, someone gets shot. I want them cornered inside the lower study."

"Victoria, you cannot handle armed intruders by yourself!"

"I don't plan on fighting them, Captain," I said, a cold smile touching my lips in the dark. "I'm going to lock them in."

"What?"

"The house was designed by a defense architect in 2012," I explained. "Grandmother was paranoid about home invasions. When the secondary generator is engaged in emergency override mode, every hurricane shutter on the ground floor drops simultaneously. It converts the study into a steel cage."

"How long will it take my men to reach the terrace?" Miller asked.

"Sixty seconds," I said. "Start your drive now."

"Moving!" Miller snapped.

I held my thumb over the green button on the generator panel.

Below me, in the lower hallway, I heard footsteps echoing up the stairs.

Madison and her crew were moving toward the primary electrical closet with heavy crowbars, planning to cut the internal battery backups before forcing the safe.

I stepped out onto the gallery bridge, standing directly under the spotlight beam of the glass atrium.

I pressed the generator override button.
