Chapter 6 - The Ledger of Betrayal

The man in the hoodie looked from the steel door to the stairs, then at Madison, his eyes filled with desperate rage.

"You said this was a clean job!" he growled at her, lowering his weapon as the realization set in that he was completely trapped inside an iron vault. "You said her security was a joke!"

"Drop the gun, Tommy!" Chloe wept, falling to her knees on the marble floor with her hands over her face. "It's over! The police are outside!"

Tommy cursed violently, throwing the pistol across the marble floor. It skidded under the grand piano with a loud clatter.

I didn't move from the balcony. I kept my phone recording every second of their breakdown.

Ten seconds later, the primary security override on the front entrance chimed. Captain Miller used his master department code to retract the iron security gate at the front foyer.

A squad of armed sheriff's deputies burst into the living room, their tactical flashlights cutting through the bright gallery light, their weapons drawn and ready.

"Hands where we can see them! On the floor! Face down! Now!" the lead deputy barked.

Tommy immediately collapsed onto his stomach, spreading his arms and legs wide. Chloe lay weeping on the floor beside him, her hands clasped behind her head.

Only Madison stood her ground.

She stood in the center of my living room, her expensive trench coat ruined with dirt, her hair wild, staring up at me as the deputies closed in on her.

"Don't touch me!" she screamed at the deputy who grabbed her wrist. "Do you know who I am?! I am Madison Vance! My father owns Vance Financial!"

"I don't care if your father owns the state of California, ma'am," Captain Miller said, stepping through the front entrance with his hand resting on his holster. "You are under arrest for felony burglary, breaking and entering, armed trespass, and grand larceny."

"She's my sister!" Madison yelled, pointing a trembling, gloved finger at me. "This is a family dispute! Victoria, tell them! Tell them it's a misunderstanding!"

I walked slowly down the grand staircase, my steps echoing through the vast room until I stood three feet away from her.

I looked into her eyes—the same eyes that had watched me with fake affection at family dinners, the same eyes that had flashed with bitter hatred when she threw hot sauce in my face two hours ago.

"There is no misunderstanding, Madison," I said, my voice ice-cold. "You are not my sister anymore. You're just a thief who got caught."

The deputy pulled her arms behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"You'll destroy the family!" Madison shrieked as she was pulled toward the door. "If you press charges, Dad will disown you! The firm will collapse! You're destroying everything!"

"No, Madison," I said, picking up the manila folder she had dropped on the floor and handing it directly to Captain Miller. "You already destroyed it. I'm just cleaning up the trash."

Miller opened the folder, scanning the financial ledger sheets inside. His eyebrows raised in shock as he read the names, offshore bank codes, and stolen asset values.

"Victoria," Miller said, looking up with a grave expression. "These documents don't just involve your sister."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

Miller pointed to the signature line at the bottom of a fraudulent wire transfer agreement dated two weeks ago.

"This isn't just Madison and Chloe," Miller whispered so only I could hear. "This transfer was authorized by the managing director of Vance Financial."

My heart went cold as stone.

May you like

The managing director wasn't Madison.

It was my father.
