Chapter 7 - Unlocking the Mind

By 5:00 AM, the underground medical facility beneath Whitmore Manor was fully operational. Built five years ago as a secure bunker in case of biological or tactical threats, it was equipped with state-of-the-art surgical and neurological monitoring equipment.
Claire lay on the center examination table, her body hooked up to advanced brain-imaging diagnostics. Dr. Thorne was bound to a steel chair in the corner of the room, watched closely by two armed guards. His face was bruised, but his eyes were filled with arrogant contempt.
“You’re insane, Whitmore,” Thorne spat. “You can't perform a neural reconstruction without our main server cluster at the Blackwood Institute. You’re going to cause a total stroke!”
I ignored him, turning to my private physician, Dr. Aris Thorne (no relation to Julian), who had been on my payroll for a decade.
“What’s her status?” I asked.
“Severe intracranial pressure,” Dr. Aris said, adjusting the diagnostic screens. “Her memory centers are firing wildly. It’s like her brain is trying to run a high-intensity computer code through damaged wiring. If we don't stabilize the neural mapping, the tissue will degrade permanently within hours.”
“How do we stop it?”
“We need to complete the data retrieval,” Dr. Aris explained. “Her brain is stuck in a loop trying to release the encrypted key. Once the key is fully articulated and downloaded, the cognitive pressure will drop.”
I stepped up to the side of Claire’s bed. Her face was pale, sweat soaking her hairline. She was drifting in and out of consciousness, her lips moving silently as if trying to form words.
I bent down close to her ear.
“Claire,” I said softly. “Can you hear me?”
Her eyelids fluttered. “Nathan... the girls... are they safe?”
“They are safe upstairs,” I said, my voice softening. “Ruth is with them. You protected them, Claire. Now let me protect you.”
“The song...” she whispered, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. “I can't... I can't remember the last line... the memory... it’s fading...”
I took her cold hand into mine.
I had spent three years running from the memory of my wife’s voice, burying the pain deep beneath layers of violence, money, and control. But now, to save the woman who had risked everything for my children, I had to bring Evelyn back into the light.
I leaned down and began to sing softly into Claire’s ear.
“Look to the east where the silver ships sail... one for the sun, and seven for the gale...”
Claire’s body relaxed slightly. Her breathing began to even out.
“Sleep now my darling, beneath the blue deep... where stars turned to diamond... and shadows... take keep...”
I paused. That was where Evelyn always stopped when singing to the girls. But as I looked at the brain monitor, I saw the neural activity spiking violently in the temporal lobe.
Claire’s eyes opened wide. She looked directly into my eyes, her voice suddenly clear and steady as she sang the missing final line—the line Evelyn had added in secret before her death:
“...where the key of the swallow lies under the keep.”
A loud, continuous beep sounded from the central console.
The black external hard drive, which Dr. Aris had connected to the brain-wave interface terminal via non-invasive scalp sensors, chimed loudly.
Decryption Successful. Downloading Blackwood Syndicate Files... 100%.
In the corner of the room, Dr. Julian Thorne’s face drained of all color. “No... impossible...”
Lines of green text began cascading across the medical monitors—names of high-ranking government officials, corporate CEOs, bank account numbers, and recorded video footage documenting the murder of Evelyn Whitmore.

Claire let out a long, shuddering sigh, her hands falling relaxed against the mattress. The erratic line on her heart monitor smoothed out into a stable, healthy rhythm.
The pressure was gone. Her mind was whole again.
