Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Unmasked

The sun rose over the Whitmore Estate, casting long golden light through the high arched windows of my private study.

The hard drive from the attic was now fully decrypted and duplicated across five secure, offshore cloud servers. What lay inside was enough to ignite a political earthquake that would shake the entire eastern seaboard.

The Blackwood Foundation was not just a medical research firm; it was a black-market intelligence agency funded by a syndicate of six elite billionaires, corrupt senators, and high-ranking intelligence directors. They used neurological manipulation to alter memories, blackmailed political leaders, and eliminated targets through artificially induced medical emergencies—just like the one that had killed Evelyn.

Sitting across from me in my study was Inspector Michael Vance—head of the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force, and a man I had known for fifteen years. He was also Clara Vance’s uncle, a fact I had uncovered only two hours earlier while reviewing her restored medical files.

Vance stared at the laptop screen on my desk, his face grim as he scrolled through the mountain of evidence.

“Jesus, Nathan,” Vance whispered, rubbing his weary eyes. “This goes all the way to the Governor’s office. They’ve been using Blackwood to rewrite testimonies, erase financial fraud, and assassinate whistleblowers for over a decade.”

“Evelyn found out,” I said, leaning back in my leather chair, a glass of untouched scotch resting near my hand. “She tried to use Clara to get the proof to you. They ran her off the road, framed it as an accident, and hunted Clara down to wipe her mind before she could talk.”

“And Clara?” Vance asked, looking toward the door. “How is she?”

“She’s upstairs resting,” I replied. “My doctors cleared her an hour ago. Her brain activity has completely stabilized.”

Vance stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. “I have enough here to issue seventy federal arrest warrants by noon. We’re moving on Blackwood’s headquarters in Manhattan with two hundred armed federal agents.”

“Make sure you leave some for me,” I said coldly.

Vance looked at me sternly. “No, Nathan. You brought us the evidence. Let the law finish this. If you take your men into Blackwood, you’ll spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary, and your daughters will lose their only remaining parent.”

I stared at him in silence for a long moment. He was right. For three years, I had fought violence with violence, believing it was the only language the world understood. But Evelyn hadn't died so I could become a monster; she had died to keep our daughters safe.

“Take them down, Michael,” I said quietly. “All of them.”
