Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs in the Foyer

While I walked down the aisle, the drama in the private entrance foyer was reaching its chaotic peak.
Vanessa was backed against the marble reception desk, two state troopers holding her arms as Agent Miller snapped the heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists.
"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking her legs out, her heels scraping wildly against the marble floor. "Do you know who I am?! My fiancé is a partner at Ashford Legal! He will destroy your careers! All of you!"
"Your fiancé," Mr. Hale’s associate said coolly, holding an iPad, "was informed of your arrest three minutes ago. He has already terminated his relationship with you and withdrawn his legal representation."
Vanessa froze, her eyes wide with shock. "What... what did you say?"
"He was provided with the forensic audit of your Cayman Islands bank account," the associate added. "Including the two hundred thousand dollars you stole from his firm's escrow account last November."
Vanessa’s mouth worked silently, but no sound came out. The complete financial and legal net that had been quietly constructed around her over eight months was finally snapping shut from every angle.
"You can't do this on her wedding day!" my mother cried out, running out of the bridal suite, her eyes red from weeping. "Please! Can’t we settle this privately after the reception?! She’s my daughter!"
Agent Miller turned to my mother, her face unreadable. "Ma'am, your daughter is being charged with multiple federal offenses involving wire fraud and grand larceny exceeding two million dollars. This is no longer a private family matter. Step back, or you will be charged with obstruction of justice."
My mother stopped in her tracks, clutching her pearl necklace, her eyes wide with terror as she realized she could no longer protect her favorite child.
"Mom!" Vanessa screamed as the two state troopers began dragging her toward the heavy glass exit doors. "Mom! Don't let them take me! Call the lawyers! Mom!"
The wedding guests sitting in the back rows of the ballroom could hear her screaming through the glass doors as she was escorted down the front steps of St. Jude’s Conservatory in full view of the local press photographers who had gathered outside to cover the high-society wedding.
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm of light.

Every tabloid photographer in the city captured the precise moment Vanessa Vaughn—socialite, fashion influencer, and serial family predator—was loaded into the back of a state police cruiser in handcuffs, her silver bridesmaid dress rumpled, her makeup ruined by hysterical tears.
