Chapter 9 - The New Legacy

Six months later, spring had returned to the city.
The grounds of the Vance Estate were covered in blooming white cherry blossoms, their delicate petals floating on the warm afternoon breeze.
Daniel and I stood on the open terrace overlooking the private lake, holding hands as the sun began to set over the skyline. My software company had just finalized its merger with Vance Logistics, creating one of the largest technology-driven real estate platforms on the East Coast, with my name listed as Chief Executive Officer.
"What are you thinking about?" Daniel asked, turning me toward him, his thumb gently tracing my jawline.
"I’m thinking about how quiet everything is," I smiled, resting my head against his chest.
"No glue?" he teased softly.
"No glue," I laughed. "No fake smiles. No hidden cameras. Just us."
Mr. Hale walked out onto the terrace, holding a legal envelope. He offered a polite nod to Daniel, then handed the envelope to me.
"The final sentencing hearing concluded an hour ago," Mr. Hale reported quietly.
I opened the envelope, pulling out the official judgment from the federal court in Manhattan.
Defendant: Vanessa Vaughn. Counts: Federal Wire Fraud, Grand Larceny, Criminal Damage to Property, Tax Evasion. Sentence: Eighteen years at Danbury Federal Correctional Institution, without eligibility for early parole, plus full restitution of three point two million dollars.
I held the paper for a moment, looking at the bold black seal of the United States District Court.
Then I folded the document neatly, slid it back into the envelope, and handed it back to Mr. Hale.
"Thank you, Mr. Hale," I said smoothly. "You can archive that file permanently."

Mr. Hale bowed his head slightly. "Understood, Mrs. Vance. Have a wonderful evening."
He turned and walked back into the house, leaving Daniel and me alone under the twilight sky.
