Chapter 10 - The Swallow's Nest

One year later.

Spring had come to Chicago, melting the dark ice of the river and bringing bright green leaves to the high trees surrounding the Lake Forest estate.

The old war with the Salerno family was a distant memory—its leaders dismantled, its assets absorbed, and its threats entirely extinguished from the city.

On the grand sunlit terrace overlooking the rolling green lawn, a large velvet playpen sat beneath the shade of a white umbrella.

Inside the playpen, two eleven-month-old toddlers—Leo and Sofia—were crawling over plush toys, their bright, curious silver-gray eyes scanning the grass as a butterfly fluttered past.

Nora stood by the terrace railing, wearing a simple, elegant sun dress made of white linen. Her dark hair was pinned back with a mother-of-pearl comb, her skin glowing with health, peace, and quiet confidence.

Around her neck hung the silver swallow locket—no longer tarnished, but restored to a brilliant, sparkling polish by the finest jeweler in the city.

Two broad arms slid around her waist from behind, drawing her gently back against a solid, warm chest.

Enzo rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the fresh scent of her skin and hair. He wore no tactical gear, no dark suit jackets—just a simple gray linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

"Are they sleeping?" Enzo murmured softly into her neck.

"Leo tried to eat a dandelion five minutes ago," Nora chuckled, leaning her head back against his shoulder. "Sofia stopped him by pulling his ear."

Enzo laughed—a low, warm sound that had become a daily music in the house over the past year. "She takes after her mother. She doesn't let men make stupid decisions."

He reached down, his broad fingers intertwining with hers, tracing the new, thin platinum band that rested on her ring finger beside a brilliant solitaire diamond.

Three months ago, in the very library where their story had begun, Enzo had dropped to his knees once more—not to beg for mercy, but to ask her to share his name, his life, and his empire as his absolute equal.

She had said yes.

Nora turned in his embrace, resting her hands against his chest, looking up into those sharp gray eyes that now held only warmth, devotion, and profound peace whenever they looked at her.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

Enzo reached up, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her cheek, then lifting the silver swallow locket resting against her collarbone.

"I was thinking about a rainy morning in my study," Enzo whispered, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "When I thought I was looking at a clumsy maid who broke a glass..."

He leaned down, pressing his lips softly, tenderly against hers, holding her close as the laughter of their children echoed across the sunlit garden.

"And I didn't know," Enzo murmured against her lips, "that she was holding my entire universe in her hands."
