Chapter 8 - The Viper's Last Strike

Two weeks passed.
The Lake Forest estate became a sanctuary of healing and luxury for Nora.
Rosa cooked three gourmet meals a day, packed with prenatal nutrients, while private obstetricians arrived at the manor to conduct full medical examinations in the comfort of the master suite. The twins were healthy, growing rapidly, and active.
Enzo lived in the east wing of the estate, refusing to cross into her bedroom unless invited, maintaining a strict, respectful boundary that slowly began to thaw the ice around Nora's heart.
Every evening at 7:00 PM, he would knock softly on her door, bring her a cup of hot chamomile tea, and sit in the armchair across from her for one hour.
They talked. Not about mob business or shipping routes, but about her father, her childhood in South Chicago, his mother who had died when he was young, and the quiet dreams she had buried when her medical debt had accrued.
Nora watched him during those long, quiet evenings. She saw the way his sharp shoulders relaxed when she smiled, the way he looked at her belly with an awe so profound it looked like prayer, and the genuine, agonizing remorse he carried for the way he had treated her in his penthouse.
"You're different here," Nora said softly one evening, watching the firelight dance across his severe profile.
"I was a dead man walking through a dark house, Nora," Enzo replied quietly, looking up from his tea. "Until I found you in that diner, I didn't know what it meant to want to be alive."
Before Nora could answer, the heavy alarm siren of the estate began to wail through the corridors—a deafening, rhythmic screech that turned the calm evening into instant chaos.
RED ALERT.
Enzo was on his feet in a microsecond, pulling a tactical pistol from his shoulder holster.
Rocco burst through the bedroom door, his face pale and bleeding from a cut on his forehead. "Enzo! It's Salerno! Old man Salerno brought thirty armed guys through the south woods! They cut the power grid and blew the rear security gate!"
Nora gasped, sitting up in bed, clutching her belly as panic surged through her blood.
Enzo turned to her instantly, stepping between her and the window. "Rocco, get her to the underground vault beneath the wine cellar. Now!"
"Enzo, no!" Nora cried out, reaching for his arm. "Don't go out there!"
Enzo looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a fierce, burning love that took her breath away. He leaned down, cupped her face in his broad hands, and pressed his lips firmly against her forehead.

"I built this house to protect you," Enzo whispered against her skin. "I am not letting anyone take my family away again. Go with Rocco."
He pulled away, racked the slide of his pistol, and sprinted down the dark hallway into the heart of the gunfire echoing from the lower floor.
