Chapter 2 - The Silence in the Ballroom

Vanessa's smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a flash of startled confusion. "Oh, come on, cousin. It was merely a joke."

Adrian took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his frame stiff with an anger that was all the more terrifying because it was entirely quiet.

"Then please explain to me exactly which part of that was supposed to be funny," Adrian said.

Nobody uttered a single word. The surrounding guests, who had been chuckling just moments before, suddenly found their eyes glued to their own shoes or the ceiling. The string quartet near the stage drifted into an awkward silence as the musicians lowered their bows, sensing the sudden shift in the room’s air pressure.

Emily stood rooted to the spot, her breathing shallow. She looked at Adrian Bennett’s profile. His jaw was set like iron, his dark hair neatly parted, his gaze piercing directly into Vanessa.

Emily had assumed that would be the conclusion of the terrible ordeal. She expected him to simply dismiss them all and walk away to avoid a public scandal.

That is, until Madison Parker, highly annoyed by the awkward silence and the obvious blow to her own dignity, decided to speak up.

"Oh, please, Adrian," Madison sneered, crossing her arms and looking down her nose at Emily. "Just take a look at how she is dressed. People like her should not even be permitted to mingle with actual guests at a venue like this. She’s dragging down the entire evening."

Adrian slowly turned to face Madison. His gaze was cold enough to freeze water.

Then, standing in front of more than two hundred high-society attendees, he delivered a statement that left his own family entirely speechless.

"The person who truly doesn't belong here tonight isn't her," Adrian said, his voice echoing clearly off the high marble walls. "It's you."

Madison’s mouth fell open. "What?"

"She is here working an honest shift, earning a living with her own hands," Adrian continued, his voice steady, deep, and utterly devoid of mercy. "While you are standing here using my mother’s memorial foundation as a platform to display your utter lack of basic decency. If anyone is dragging down this evening, Madison, it is you and Vanessa."

A collective gasp rippled through the nearest tables. Madison’s face turned bright red, her hands shaking as she clutched her pearl necklace. Vanessa looked as though she had been struck across the face.

Adrian did not wait for a response. He turned back to Emily, his expression softening instantly into something respectful and profoundly kind. He stepped closer, bypassing his shocked relatives entirely, and held out his arm.

"Miss," Adrian said gently. "May I escort you away from these people?"

Emily stared at his offered arm. Her heart was beating so hard against her ribs she felt lightheaded. She looked at his face, searching for any trace of mockery, any sign that this was merely another layer of the joke. But there was none. His eyes were clear, steady, and filled with a quiet strength that made her feel, for the first time in six years, that she was not entirely alone in the world.

"I... I have to work, sir," Emily whispered, her voice barely audible. "My shift isn't over."

"Your shift is over," Adrian said softly, reaching down to pick up her fallen server coat from a chair nearby. "And you will be paid for the entire evening. I’ll make sure of it personally."

May you like

He offered his arm again. Emily took a slow breath, lifted her hand, and rested her fingers lightly on his dark suit sleeve.

As Adrian led her away from the central table, past the frozen faces of Madison, Vanessa, and fifty of Manhattan's wealthiest elites, the silence in the ballroom was so complete that the only sound was the soft tap of Emily’s glued shoes against the polished marble floor.
