Chapter 8 - The Power of Protection

"Adrian!" Madison gasped, taking a step backward into the hallway wall. "What... what are you doing here?"

Adrian walked up the final flight of stairs, his steps slow, heavy, and deliberate. He didn't even look at Madison at first; his eyes went straight to Emily, assessing her face to ensure she was safe.

"Are you alright, Emily?" Adrian asked softly.

"I'm fine," Emily said, her heart pounding against her ribs. "She just arrived two minutes ago."

Adrian turned his gaze to Madison. The cold intensity in his eyes was far worse than it had been in the hotel ballroom.

"How did you get this address, Madison?" Adrian demanded.

"I... I asked Vanessa's assistant," Madison stammered, clutching her handbag tightly against her stomach. "Adrian, please! You have to understand! My father is losing millions because of the funding freeze! I was just trying to fix things! I offered her fifty thousand dollars—that's a fortune to someone like her!"

"Someone like her?" Adrian stepped closer, his shadow completely covering Madison. "You came into her home, threatened her livelihood, and offered her a bribe to cover up your own despicable behavior."

"It wasn't a bribe! It was a settlement!" Madison cried out, tears of frustration finally spilling over her cheeks. "Why do you care so much about her? She's a nobody! She's a temporary waitress!"

"She is a human being with ten times the character you will ever possess," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, she is no longer a catering waitress."

Madison blinked, confused. "What?"

Adrian opened the leather folder in his hand and pulled out a single sheet of official stationary.

"This morning, Bennett Global acquired Premier Hospitality," Adrian said calmly. "I am now the sole owner of the catering company she worked for. Which means your father's threat to blacklist her from catering shifts in New York is entirely useless."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at Adrian, completely unable to process the scale of what he had just done. He had bought an entire catering enterprise just to shield her from a real estate tycoon's retaliation.

"Furthermore," Adrian continued, turning to his head of security, "Miss Parker is currently trespassing on private residential property and attempting to coerce a witness in an ongoing corporate dispute. Escort her out of the building. If she sets foot on this street again, file an immediate restraining order."

"Yes, Mr. Bennett," the large security officer said, stepping forward and firmly gripping Madison’s arm.

"Adrian! No! Please! Talk to my father!" Madison screamed as she was pulled backward down the dark stairwell, her designer heels clicking frantically against the concrete steps. "You can't do this to us! Adrian!"

Her screams faded as the heavy front door of the apartment building slammed shut downstairs, leaving the hallway in sudden, absolute quiet.

Adrian stood outside Emily’s open door. He took a slow breath, smoothed his wool coat, and looked at her with a gentle, almost apologetic expression.

"I apologize for the disturbance, Emily," Adrian said softly. "I came here to give you some news, but I arrived just as she was threatening you."

Emily stood in the doorway, her hands trembling slightly, staring at the man who had twice now stepped into her life like an unstoppable shield.

"You... you bought the catering company?" she whispered.

"It was a small acquisition," Adrian said with a faint, quiet smile. "And a very worthwhile investment. May I come in?"
