Chapter 3 - BLOOD AND IRON

I stood up slowly from the chair, stepping directly between my mother and Mara’s bed.

"You're too late, Mother," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register that made the security guards behind her stiffen.

Evelyn's eyes flicked to Mara, then down to my hand, where the brass key was tucked securely into my palm. A subtle, dangerous shift occurred in her expression—the mask of maternal concern slipping away to reveal the cold, calculating matriarch beneath.

"You always were too soft, Grant," Evelyn said quietly, taking a step into the room. "Just like your father. Charles thought he could outsmart me by placing the family’s legacy into the hands of a working-class girl from Boston. He was wrong."

"She carries my sons, Evelyn," I growled, stepping forward until I was inches from her face. "My twin boys are down the hall in incubators right now."

Evelyn didn't even blink. "Bastards born out of wedlock, delivered seven months after a finalized divorce settlement, carry no legal weight in the Waverly estate charter. Thomas has already executed the proxy vote at the board meeting tonight. By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Waverly Maritime will be officially sold to the Apex Syndicate."

My blood ran cold. The Apex Syndicate was a shell corporation linked to offshore private equity—the very group Thomas owed tens of millions to.

"You're liquidating Father's company to cover Thomas's debts," I stated, the horrifying truth completely clear now.

"I am saving this family from total ruin!" Evelyn snapped, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "Thomas made mistakes in Asia, yes! But he is my eldest son! I will not allow your late father's sentimentality toward a nobody like Mara to destroy what took three generations to build!"

She gestured sharply to her guards. "Get him out of the room. And secure the girl."

Before the guards could take a single step forward, June Harper stepped into the doorway, holding a digital tablet connected to the hospital’s central security grid.

"I wouldn't touch anyone in this room, Mrs. Waverly," June spoke smoothly. "St. Catherine’s is a medical institution, not a Waverly property. I have already alerted the Chief of Medicine and the NYPD Precinct commander—who happens to be Mara’s uncle."

Evelyn turned her head slowly, her eyes burning with pure venom. "You are fired, nurse."

"You don't employ me, Evelyn," June replied with a sharp smile. "Now take your thugs and get off my floor before I have you escorted out in handcuffs for trespassing in an intensive care unit."

Evelyn stood motionless for three long seconds. She looked at me, then at Mara, her lips curling into a cruel, narrow smile.

"Enjoy your night, Grant," Evelyn whispered softly. "Because when the sun rises tomorrow, you won't have a company left to inherit. And those two broken children down the hall won't have a dime to their names."

She turned around and swept out of the room, her guards following close behind.

I turned back to Mara, grabbing her hand once more.

"I need to go to the bank," I told her. "I need to get that original will before eight AM."

"Grant... wait," Mara gasped, reaching under her pillow, pulling out a small black flash drive. "Take this too. It's the encryption key for your father's vault."

I took the drive, kissing her forehead gently. "Rest, Mara. I am going to end this tonight."
