Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM

At 7:45 AM, the top floor of the Waverly Maritime Tower in Lower Manhattan was buzzing with tense energy.

Inside the executive boardroom, twelve high-ranking board members sat around a massive thirty-foot mahogany table. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the morning sun was breaking through the rain clouds, casting bright golden light over the city skyline.

At the head of the table sat Evelyn Waverly, looking regal, calm, and utterly in control.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Evelyn spoke, her voice smooth and commanding. "We have reached a critical juncture in our company's history. Due to the recent financial instability caused by the former management, I am motioning for an immediate vote to approve the complete acquisition of Waverly Maritime by the Apex Investment Group."

An older board member named Arthur Pendelton raised a hand hesitantly. "Mrs. Waverly... Grant was supposed to be present for this vote. Where is he?"

Evelyn offered a soft, tragic sigh. "My son Grant has suffered a personal mental breakdown following his divorce from Mara. He has stepped down from his executive duties indefinitely. I carry his voting proxy today."

She picked up the gavel. "Shall we proceed with the vote?"

BOOM!

The double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with violent force!

The entire boardroom flinched as one body.

I walked into the room.

I was wearing a fresh dark grey suit, my hair combed back, carrying the leather folder in my right hand. Behind me stepped Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Lin and four federal agents carrying official sealing warrants.

Evelyn’s face drained of every drop of color. She dropped the gavel onto the mahogany table.

"Grant..." Evelyn gasped, her voice losing its smooth composure for the first time in her life.

"Put the gavel down, Mother," I said, walking slowly down the center of the boardroom table, my leather shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Arthur Pendelton stood up, bewildered.

"The meaning of this intrusion, Arthur," Sarah Lin spoke loudly, stepping forward and flashing her federal credentials, "is that this board meeting is officially shut down under federal racketeering and fraud statutes."

Gasps erupted across the boardroom.

I stopped at the head of the table, standing directly over my mother. I set the leather folder down flat in front of her, opening the blue court seal to reveal my father’s original, unedited will and the forensic audit logs.

"Father never gave you proxy control of the voting shares, Evelyn," I stated, my voice echoing through the silent room. "Fifty-one percent of Waverly Maritime was placed into the Vanguard Trust—a trust created for my sons, Leo and Charles Waverly, delivered three hours ago at St. Catherine’s Hospital."

Evelyn stared down at the documents, her hands trembling violently. "This is... this is a forgery..."

"Thomas has already signed a full confession at the 19th Precinct," Sarah Lin added coldly. "He detailed how you helped him launder eighty million dollars, how you forged Mara Bennett’s signature, and how you ordered the arson attack on the Oak Ridge estate."

The board members looked at Evelyn in absolute, stunned horror. Arthur Pendelton shook his head in disgust, stepping away from her side of the table.

Two federal agents walked up behind Evelyn's chair, pulling out steel handcuffs.

Evelyn slowly stood up, turning her head to look at me. The mask of power had completely shattered, leaving behind an old, defeated woman staring at the son she had underestimated.

"You destroyed this family, Grant," Evelyn whispered bitterly.

May you like

"No, Mother," I said, looking her straight in the eyes without a trace of hesitation or doubt. "You destroyed this family the day you decided my sons didn't deserve to exist."

The agents placed her in handcuffs and escorted her out of the boardroom in absolute, breathless silence.
