Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

By 5:30 a.m., the gray mist of early dawn hung low over the Hudson River. The silver Subaru sat hidden inside an unheated, single-car garage behind an abandoned gas station on the outskirts of Peekskill, New York.

Inside the garage, I stood before the open trunk of a second vehicle—a dark blue Volvo wagon with Vermont plates, arranged for me by Arthur’s network weeks ago. My body was beginning to feel the heavy physical toll of the night. My lower back throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, and my feet were swollen inside my boots.

I sat down on a wooden crate inside the garage, opening a thermos of warm water I had brought with me, forcing myself to take slow, controlled breaths.

Postpartum instability. Paranoia. Dangerous behavior.

Dominic’s words echoed in my mind like a rhythmic drumbeat. He had laid out his trap with incredible meticulousness. He hadn't just made verbal accusations; he had spent months constructing an entire paper reality.

I opened my laptop on my knees, plugging in the encrypted drive once more to review the files before I lost reliable cellular coverage near the border. I needed to understand every piece of armor he had built for himself so I could dismantle it piece by piece.

The first folder contained banking records. Dominic had been systematically transferring small, regular sums from our joint domestic account into private offshore accounts registered in my maiden name—accounts I had never opened, with forged signatures that looked terrifyingly authentic. To an outside auditor or a family court judge, it would look as though I had been quietly embezzling funds from my husband for over a year, preparing to flee the country with his child.

The second folder contained emails sent from an IP address mapped to our Fifth Avenue penthouse. They were addressed to various high-end private adoption agencies and illegal surrogacy brokers in South America, inquiring about "relinquishing maternal rights discreetly."

My stomach churned with nausea. He wasn't just planning to lock me away in an asylum; he was building a evidentiary paper trail that would justify my complete legal erasure. If I died in that facility, or if I were rendered permanently incapacitated by heavy psychiatric drugs, the court would look at these records and conclude that I was an unstable, unfit woman who had abandoned her family.

"You underestimated one thing, Dominic," I whispered, staring at the blue light of the screen.

He had built a paper fortress, but paper burned easily if you set the fire from the inside.

I opened a secondary, heavily encrypted email application that connected directly to three of the most influential investigative journalists in New York, Washington, and London. These were not red-carpet reporters or society bloggers who attended Vance Enterprises galas. They were financial crime investigators who had been digging into Dominic’s offshore acquisitions for years, repeatedly hitting brick walls due to his formidable legal team.

I did not send the files yet. A Premature leak would allow Dominic to secure an emergency gag order from a federal judge on grounds of corporate espionage or stolen intellectual property.

Instead, I set up an automated, dead-man's switch script.

If I did not input a specific thirty-two-character cryptographic key into a secure cloud server every forty-eight hours, the entire contents of Dominic’s hidden BUILDING INSURANCE folder—along with Dr. Harrison’s rigged medical evaluations, the forged bank accounts, and the legal communications outlining his plan to commit a pregnant woman—would be automatically transmitted to twenty-seven news desks, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

I closed the laptop, packed it into a signal-blocking Faraday sleeve, and placed it in the Volvo’s trunk.

As I pulled out of the Peekskill garage and headed north on the rural back roads toward upstate New York, my phone lit up with an automated alert on the car’s secondary dash display.

The news outlets were already running their morning ticker.

I looked at my reflection in the rear-view mirror. My face was pale, shadows under my eyes, but beneath the exhaustion, there was a cold, unwavering focus.

The hunt had officially begun.
