Chapter 9 - The Collapse

The aftermath of the broadcast was swift, brutal, and historic.

Within two hours of the live stream, Vance Enterprises stock plummeted thirty-two percent in late-day trading—the largest single-day loss in the company's forty-year history. The board of directors held an immediate, closed-door emergency vote.

At 6:15 p.m., while Dominic was still huddled in his private office trying to reach federal prosecutors who refused to take his calls, the board delivered its verdict: Dominic Vance was formally stripped of his executive authority and removed as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Enterprises, effective immediately.

By 8:00 p.m., Federal marshals and investigators from the New York State Attorney General's Office served search warrants at the Vance Enterprises headquarters, the Fifth Avenue penthouse, and the private offices of Charles Vane.

Dr. Robert Harrison was arrested at his Park Avenue clinic at 9:30 p.m., charged with medical fraud, falsification of records, and conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint. Facing forty years in federal prison, Harrison took a plea deal within three hours, handing over audio recordings of Dominic instructing him to forge the psychiatric evaluations.

Vanessa Cole resigned her executive position via a public statement at midnight, releasing her personal email archives to prosecutors in a desperate attempt to distance herself from Dominic’s legal collapse.

In Manhattan, Dominic found himself entirely isolated inside his empty Fifth Avenue penthouse. His personal security team, realizing he was under active federal indictment, abandoned their posts. His personal assets were frozen by a federal judge following an emergency application filed by the SEC investigating offshore money laundering tied to the forged bank accounts he had created in my name.

At 3:00 a.m. local time, my burner phone rang.

It was a private number. I sat in the quiet living room of Dr. Rostova’s private residence, watching the falling snow outside the window.

I answered.

"Clara," Dominic’s voice came through the speaker.

He sounded nothing like the polished, invincible titan who had stood beneath the thousand crystal lights forty-eight hours ago. His voice was cracked, raspy, trembling with a mix of breathless rage and unvarnished panic.

"You destroyed everything," he choked out, the sound of glass breaking echoing in the background—he was drinking alone in the dark penthouse. "My company. My reputation. My legacy. Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"

"I saved my son, Dominic," I said softly, my tone completely devoid of anger, replaced by a vast, quiet detachment.

"He is MY son!" Dominic roared into the phone. "A Vance! You have no right to take him from me! I built an empire for him!"

"You didn't build an empire for him, Dominic," I said quietly. "You built a monument to your own vanity. You treated your wife like an accessory and your child like a trophy to be secured by legal fraud. You thought you were playing chess with pieces that couldn't fight back."

"I will fight you in every court on this planet!" he screamed, his breath ragged. "I will hire every attorney in North America! I will spending every dollar I have left to take that baby away from you!"

"With what money, Dominic?" I asked smoothly, repeating the exact three words he had spoken to Vanessa Cole in the library of the Halston Grand Hotel.

Silence fell over the line—a heavy, suffocating silence that stretched between Manhattan and Montreal.

"The federal court froze your primary accounts forty minutes ago," I added calmly. "Your board has terminated your salary. Your legal team has withdrawn their representation due to non-payment of retainers. You are ruined, Dominic. And when you stand before a criminal judge next week, you won't be fighting for custody... you'll be fighting to stay out of federal prison."

I didn't wait for him to reply. I ended the call, removed the SIM card, and dropped it into the small fire burning in the hearth.
