Chapter 6 - The Flash Drive

Emma didn't knock on Everett’s office door; she pushed it open and stepped inside, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.
Everett was sitting at his desk, reviewing corporate ledger sheets with his chief legal advisor. He looked up sharply, his brow furrowing at Emma’s frantic state.
"Miss Reed? What is the meaning of this?" Everett demanded, standing up.
"Mr. Calloway..." Emma panted, locking the office door behind her. "I... I listened to Viktor. Julian’s head of security. He was in the rear alleyway on his phone."
Everett’s legal advisor frowned. "Miss Reed, making accusations against Mr. Vance’s staff—"
"Quiet," Everett commanded flatly, stepping around his desk. He walked straight up to Emma, his hazel eyes piercingly intense. "What did you hear, Emma?"
Emma took a deep breath, forcing her voice to stabilize. "Viktor said Daniel brought a flash drive from upstate. He said Julian ordered him to clear the third-floor security cameras at 1:00 AM during the power grid maintenance. They are going to break into Daniel’s suite to take the drive... and make it look like a break-in gone wrong if he resists."
Everett’s face went dead white, then twisted into a dark, terrifying mask of pure fury.
"That bastard," Everett growled softly, his voice vibrating with absolute menace.
"You know about the flash drive?" Emma asked, trembling.
Everett walked over to his wall safe, spinning the combination dial with practiced speed.
"Three years ago, Daniel was accused of embezzling eight million dollars from our European expansion fund," Everett explained, pulling a secure satellite phone from the safe. "The board ousted him, and he took the blame to save the family name. But Daniel didn't steal that money. He spent the last three years in upstate New York secretly tracing the offshore bank accounts."
Everett looked at Emma, his expression grave.
"The flash drive Daniel brought tonight contains absolute proof that Julian Vance stole that money," Everett revealed. "Julian framed my brother, took his executive seat, and drove him out of the city."
Emma gasped. "And now that Daniel brought the evidence here—"
"Julian is going to eliminate him before he can hand it to the board," Everett finished coldly.

He tapped his satellite phone, putting it to his ear as he looked at Emma with profound respect.
"You just saved my brother’s life for the second time tonight, Miss Reed," Everett said softly. "Now, stay behind me. We are going to settle this once and for all."
