Chapter 7 - The Traitor’s Table

By 11:30 PM, the private investor dinner upstairs in the grand ballroom was coming to a close.
The room was filled with soft orchestral jazz, crystal chandeliers casting golden light over thirty high-profile investors sipping vintage champagne.
Julian Vance stood near the center of the room, holding court with three lead investors from London, laughing charmingly as he raised his glass.
"To the future of Calloway Hospitality," Julian toasted smoothly. "With our new European expansion launching next month, yields will double."
"Hear, hear!" the investors clapped.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
Everett Calloway walked into the room. He did not look like a corporate host; he looked like an executioner. His face was cold stone, his jaw set tightly.
Beside him walked Emma Reed, carrying a sleek silver laptop, followed by two armed private security guards wearing dark tactical suits.
The music faded into silence. The investors turned in confusion.
Julian’s smile faltered slightly, his eyes narrowing as he watched Everett approach. "Everett? What is the meaning of this? We were just concluding the final investment toasts."
Everett stopped three feet away from Julian, looking down at his business partner with utter contempt.
"The toasts are canceled, Julian," Everett said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.
Julian let out a forced, polite laugh. "Everett, have you had too much to drink? You're embarrassing us in front of our London partners—"
"I’m not embarrassing you, Julian," Everett cut him off coldly. "I’m exposing you."
Everett motioned to Emma.
Emma stepped forward calmly, placing the silver laptop on the main presentation table in the center of the room and plugging it into the large overhead projector screens mounted on the walls.
With a few quick keystrokes, the presentation screens displayed a vast web of offshore bank accounts, wire transfer receipts, and forged signatures—all bearing the name Julian Vance LLC.
Gasps erupted across the room. The London investors stepped back from Julian as if he were covered in plague.
"These are forged!" Julian shrieked, his face turning beet red as he glared furiously at Emma. "Where did you get these fake documents?!"
"They aren't fake, Julian," a deep voice called out from the back of the room.
The crowd parted.

Daniel Calloway stepped into the ballroom, wearing a clean charcoal suit provided by the estate, holding little Lily’s hand. The little girl looked clean, brushed, and happy, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Julian stared at Daniel, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror.
