Chapter 8 - The Heir of Chicago

Two months later, the first snow of November began to fall over Lake Forest.
Inside the private medical wing built into the lower level of the Lake Forest estate, four top obstetricians and a team of nurses worked in calm, efficient rhythm.
Arthur stood beside the bed, holding Chloe’s hand tightly in his own. He was wearing scrubs over his dark shirt, his face pale with anxiety, sweating more than he ever had during a firefight.
“Push, Chloe! One more time!” the lead doctor commanded.
Chloe gripped Arthur’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned white, letting out a long, fierce scream that echoed through the room.
Arthur leaned over her, his forehead against hers, whispering fiercely into her ear. “You’ve got this, my love. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
With one final, surging effort, Chloe fell back against the pillows, gasping for air.
A second later, a loud, healthy, indignant cry shattered the silence of the room.
The lead doctor smiled broadly, lifting a small, red, squirming baby covered in a white towel. “It’s a boy, Mr. and Mrs. Romano! A healthy, seven-pound boy!”
Arthur felt his knees go weak. The man who ruled Chicago’s underworld stood frozen, tears streaming down his face as the nurse cleaned the child and laid him gently onto Chloe’s bare chest.
The baby instantly stopped crying, his tiny, dark-haired head resting over his mother’s beating heart. His tiny fingers reached out blindly, curling tightly around Arthur’s thumb.
Arthur stared down at the microscopic hand holding his finger, feeling a sensation so profound it rendered him completely speechless.
“Look at him, Arthur,” Chloe whispered, her voice weak but full of boundless joy. “He has your hair.”
“And your strength,” Arthur rasped, bending down to press his lips gently against his son’s tiny forehead, then against Chloe’s lips. “What are we going to name him?”
Chloe looked at Arthur, her eyes shining in the soft light of the room. “Leo helped save us at the cathedral. And your father’s name was Matteo...”
“Matteo Leo Romano,” Arthur declared softly, his thumb gently caressing his son’s cheek. “He will never know the fear we lived through, Chloe. I will build a world where he can walk in the light.”
Leo Barnes stepped into the room two hours later, holding a bottle of twenty-year-old scotch. When he saw Arthur sitting beside the bed, carefully cradling the small bundle in his arms, the hardened security chief stopped in his tracks, wiping a tear from his own eye.
“Is that the boss?” Leo whispered with a grin.
“That’s Matteo,” Arthur said, raising his head, a proud, protective smile lighting up his face. “Come meet your godson, Leo.”
Leo walked over, looking down at the sleeping child with deep respect. “The entire family is waiting outside, Arthur. All the capos, the soldiers, the street bosses. They want to pay their respects to the new heir.”
Arthur looked at Chloe, who gave him a gentle, approving nod.
Arthur stood up carefully, cradling Matteo securely against his chest, and walked toward the double doors of the medical wing.
When the doors opened, thirty of the most dangerous men in the Midwest—men who controlled ports, distribution, political figures, and street territories—were standing in absolute silence along the wide corridor.
When they saw Arthur step out holding his son, every single man bowed his head in unison.
“Long live Matteo Romano!” Leo declared loudly.

“Long live the heir!” the men echoed, their voices resounding through the estate.
Arthur raised his head, holding his son high, his dark eyes sweeping over his men with absolute, supreme authority. “The Romano family stands united. And anyone who threatens my wife or my son will burn.”
