Chapter 9 - The Trial in Rome

Two months later, the spring sun shone brightly over the historic city of Rome.

The Piazza della Giustizia was packed with international journalists, legal scholars, and Italian news crews. The high-profile trial regarding the illegal seizure of Mediterranean maritime trusts had reached its dramatic conclusion.

Inside the grand marble courtroom of the High Court, Isabella stood at the witness podium wearing a tailored navy suit, her hair styled in an elegant braid.

For three hours, she had delivered brilliant, flawless testimony, decoding the complex archaic Sicilian ciphers of Don Vito Romano’s journals before a panel of seven international judges. Her translations were so clear, so mathematically precise, that the Moretti defense team had been completely dismantled.

“In conclusion,” Isabella spoke clearly into the microphone, her voice echoing off the ancient marble walls, “the land deeds of 1948 belong solely to the Romano Family Foundation, establishing them as a legitimate, non-profit public trust in perpetuity.”

The Chief Judge nodded slowly, striking his wooden gavel against the bench with a heavy, final thud.

“The court rules in favor of the claimant,” the judge declared. “The properties are officially restored to the Romano Foundation.”

The courtroom erupted into applause and flashbulbs.

Isabella stepped down from the podium, feeling a profound wave of relief and accomplishment wash over her.

Sitting in the front row was Matteo. He stood up, looking at her with a look of such overwhelming pride and devotion that it took her breath away. Beside him sat Signora Rossi and her young grandson, both smiling through tears of pure joy.

Matteo walked over to Isabella, wrapping his arms around her waist and lifting her slightly off the ground as he held her close against his chest.

“You were incredible,” he whispered against her ear, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved my family’s legacy, Isabella.”

“We saved it together, Matteo,” she smiled, pulling back to look into his grey eyes.
