Chapter 6 - The Crack in the Shell

The hallway fell into a suffocating, dead silence.

Maya stood pressed against her shattered doorframe, her breath coming in fast, terrifying hitches, her hands shaking violently. She looked from the pool of blood on the linoleum, to the shattered lock, and finally at the man sitting in the wheelchair four feet away.

Tristan released his breath slowly, rolling his shoulders to settle his posture back into that of a weak invalid. He turned his chair toward her.

"Are you hurt?" he asked softly.

Maya couldn't speak. She stared at his right hand—the hand that had just broken a syndicate enforcer's wrist and jaw in less than two seconds without even standing up from his chair.

"Who... who are you?" Maya whispered, her voice breaking. "You're not just a sick man... you're... you're something else."

Tristan looked down at his calloused palms. "I am a man who lost everything because he trusted the wrong person. And I am a man who doesn't like seeing good people destroyed by scum."

Maya sank down onto the floor of the hallway, her knees giving out under the immense weight of the night's horror. She pulled her knees to her chest and buried her face in her arms, her body shaking as uncontrollable sobs tore through her chest.

"They're going to kill Lily," she sobbed into her arms. "Eddie will go to his bosses. They'll come back with guns. They'll kill my sister, they'll kill me... and they'll kill you."

Tristan stared at her collapsed form.

For three years, he had lived in a world where money, power, and betrayal were the only currencies that mattered. He had built an armor around his heart so thick that even Celeste’s bullet hadn't truly penetrated it. But watching this small, brave girl who had fed him when he had nothing, crying on a dirty linoleum floor because she tried to save her family... something inside Tristan broke forever.

He unlocked the footrests of his wheelchair.

Slowly, deliberately, Tristan Wolfe stood up.

Maya didn't see it at first. She was still weeping into her knees. But then she felt a shadow fall over her. She lifted her head through her tears—and her breath caught completely in her throat.

The crippled man from Apartment 4A was standing upright.

He stood six-foot-three, broad-shouldered, towering over her like a dark monolith of iron and muscle. There was no limp. No weakness. No pain. He stood with the effortless grace of an apex warrior, his eyes burning with an ancient, lethal power that seemed to fill the entire hallway.

"Tristan... your... your legs..." she gasped, stumbling backward against the wood.

Tristan reached down, offering her his hand. "Nobody is going to kill your sister, Maya. And nobody is going to touch you again."

She stared at his hand—large, rough, and powerful. She hesitated for one brief second, then reached out and placed her small, trembling hand into his grip.

Tristan pulled her to her feet with effortless ease.

"Pack your mother's medicine and your documents," Tristan commanded quietly. "Tonight, we take your sister back."
